MERRILL is making in his progressive activities as a contractor and builder a definite contribution to the material development and advancement of his home city, Miami, where he has been prominently concerned also in the platting and developing of attractive subdivisions. Mr. Merrill claims the old Keystone State as a place of his nativity, his birth having occurred at Bangor, Pennsylvania, in 1888, and his parents, ERWIN and EMMA C. (HOLLAND) MERRILL, likewise being natives of that state. The early education of Mr. Merrill was obtained in the public schools and Lafayette College, and as a youth he learned the carpenter’s trade and the details of general contracting and building under the direction of his father, who held prestige as a contractor and builder of the first rank. Incidentally he learned also the lessons of thoroughness, efficiency and good workmanship that have contributed much to his success in his individual operations as a contractor and builder and as a reliable and enterprising business man. He was identified with contracting and building in the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and early in 1919 he visited Miami and became so deeply impressed with the manifold attractions and prospects of this fine little Florida city that he forthwith sent for his family to join him there for the establishing of a permanent home. Since coming to Miami Mr. Merrill has with characteristic energy and enterprise become actively and extensively engaged in constructive business as a contractor and builder, and has shown civic loyalty in connection with various development enterprises. He has been concerned in the building up of several subdivisions to the city, including the beautiful Shadow Lawn subdivision. He erected the fine residences of L. C. TIFFANY on Brickell Avenue, and of ALFRED MITCHELL, and has operated largely in the construction of modern residence buildings in Coral Gables, all of his contract work having been of the better type of modern construction work, and a goodly number of the best homes in Miami representing the results of his enterprise and the work of his skilled corps of artisans. Mr. Merrill is affiliated with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Masonic fraternity, and he and his wife are active members of the First Methodist Episcopal Church at Miami, known as the White Temple. Of this church his cousin, Rev. RICHARD N. MERRILL, is the pastor, his father, Rev. PHILIP S. MERRILL, D. D., was a pastor of this church at the time when the present fine edifice was erected, and is now pastor of the Methodist Church at Sebring, this state. He previously held a number of important pastoral charges, including that of the First Methodist Episcopal Church in the City of Omaha, Nebraska. Mr. Merrill wedded Miss ELSIE C. ROWLAND, of Bangor, Pennsylvania, and they have two children: WALTER S. and ALFRED ROWLAND.
