Henry Avenue Tampa 4, Florida Re: Confederate Military Service Records Dear Mrs. Alderman: This will acknowledge your letter of April 18, 1963, requesting Confederate Military Service Records of the following listed Confederate Veterans for whom I am furnishing you information that is available in our files. Joseph Philip Caruthers – I find that a soldier of the Confederacy by the name of J. P. Caruthers applied for a Confederate Veteran’s Pension under date of July 26, 1922, with pay at the rate of $300.00 per annum. This soldier drew this pension until his death which occurred on the 4th day of October, 1932; after his death his widow, Annie E. (Matchett) Caruthers, applied for and received a Widow’s Pension on the basis of the Confederate Military Service Record contained in her husband’s application. The pension certificate number for both of these pensions is #10298. I am enclosing photostatic copies of these applications. David Addison – You requested Confederate Military Service Record on a veteran by the name of David Addison; on reference to our Confederate Pension Files I find a veteran by the name of David J. Addison presumed to be the veteran about whom you inquire since his origin of enlistment and previous residence was in the Tampa area. The widow, Isabella Addison, was awarded a Confederate Widow’s Pension under Certificate #11560 and I have no record that the veteran himself applied for or received a pension during his life-time. I am also enclosing a photostatic copy of transcript from the War Department, the Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, D.C., dated January 28, 1908, that further deals and amplifies on this veteran’s Military Service Record with the C. S. A. ******************************************************************** Mrs. J. L. Alderman Tampa 4, Florida May 1, 19-Safety-3 Page -2- James Henry Brandon – You requested Confederate Military Service Record on a soldier by the name of James Henry Brandon; a search of our Confederate Pension Files does not indicate that this veteran, or his widow if he was married, over applied for or received a Confederate Pension from the State of Florida. On reference to the publication, “Soldiers of Florida” page #134, Roll of Company K – 4th Florida Infantry Roster I find a James H. Brandon as being a member of that company July, 1861, Promoted Corporal, Sergeant; honorable mention in the remarks column. I find no other record in this re- lation and assume that he is the man about whom you inquire. Enoch Miller Darsey – A search of our available records does not indicate that this man ever applied for or received a Confederate Pension from the State of Florida, or his widow if he was married, nor am I able to locate or identify this man otherwise as a Confederate Veteran from the information given in your letter. Failure to find a record of this man does not preclude the fact that possibly he may have saw service with the C.S.A.; the records at their best are very incomplete. David R. Wood – On reference to micro-film copy #253, roll #526, has been found a man on the rolls by the name of David R. Wood having served in Company D, 13th Battalion, North Carolina Artillery as Private; I find no record of a man of this nature having served from the State of Florida nor having received a Confederate Pension from the State. It may be possible that this is the man about whom you inquire. This will certify that the above contained information and photostatic copies are a reflection of official records on file in the State Board of Pensions, Office of the State Comptroller, Tallahassee, Florida. Very truly yours, W. C. Hoffman, Secretary State Board of Pensions WCH/vm Encl. ********************************************************************** File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/fl/desoto/military/civilwar/pensions/addison15nmt.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/flfiles/ File size: 22.2 Kb
