The son was born at Jacksonville, Florida, October 10, 1874, oldest of his parents’ children. He was educated in the public schools at Jacksonville, attended the Bethel Military Academy at Warrington, Virginia, taking the civil engineering course, and after completing his education was for several years connected with the National Peace River Phosphate Company at Janejay, Florida, as dredging superintendent. He left this work early in 1898 to join the army at the time of the Spanish-American war. He became a member of Company A of the first Florida Regiment, Light Infantry, and was mustered into the Federal Army on April 23, 1898, at Tampa, as member of Company E. Later he was stationed at Fernandina, Florida, at Huntsville, Alabama, and at Tallahassee, Florida, and was mustered out as a quartermaster sergeant, December 3, 1898. After performing this military duty Mr. Ellis returned to Jacksonville and was associated with the Florida Railway Company on its survey through a country between Live Oak and Perry. Later he was chief engineer for the construction of this branch of the road. In 1908 he again located at Jacksonville, and with T. HERD KOOKER and ERNEST W. CURTIS established the firm of Ellis, Curtis and Kooker, civil engineers and surveyors, a firm with established business connections and a high reputation in their field throughout Florida. Mr. Ellis is a member of the Florida Engineering Society, is a democrat and attends the Episcopal Church. December 25, 1902, at Morganfield, Kentucky, he married CAROLINE PENTICE.
