EVANS, city commissioner of Jacksonville, and part owner of the William A. Evans Lumber Company, wholesale lumber and planing mill, is one of the solid and representative business men of Duval County. He was born in Marion County, South Carolina, June 16, 1862, a son of DIXON and ELIZA JANE (EVANS) EVANS, he born in North Carolina in 1818, died in 1888, and she, born in South Carolina in 1833, died in 1921. They had six children, four of whom survive, and of them all WILLIAM A. EVANS is the third in order of birth. The father was a physician, having graduated from Jefferson Medical College at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and he continued in an active practice the remainder of his life. For years he was a member of the local, state and national medical associations. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Masonic fraternity. In politics he was a democrat. Growing up in his native state, WILLIAM A. EVANS learned habits of industry and thrift while attending the public schools, and subsequently widened the scope of his information as a student of the University of South Carolina. For a time after leaving the University he was engaged in conducting a lumber business in Georgia, but left that state for Madison County, Florida, in 1888, and for two years continued in the same line of business. He was then connected with the Savannah, Florida & Western Railroad, beginning his connection with the road in general offices. In 1895 he left railroading and returned to the lumber business at Fernandina, Florida in 1908 he came to Jacksonville and organized his present company, the yards being at Atlanta Coast Export Dock and at Commodore Point. Very prominent in the ranks of the democratic party, he was a logical candidate of his ticket for the office of city commissioner in 1919, was elected by a gratifying majority, and is still the incumbent of the office. Practical and with a strong sense of civic pride, he is a very valuable man to have on the commission, and with his associates is rendering a much-appreciated service to the city. The First Methodist Episcopal Church of Jacksonville holds his membership, and through its medium he gives expression to his religious faith. A Mason, he belongs to Amela Lodge No. 47, F. and A. M., of Fernandina; Fernandina Chapter, R. A. M.; Damascus Commandery, K. T., Morocco Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S. He is also a member of the Independent Order of Iron Fellows, the Knights of Pythias, the Old Colonial Club and the Auto Club, and is very popular in all of these fraternities and organizations. On May 6, 1899, Mr. Evans married CHRISTINE HOPPER, and they have two sons, WILLIAM A., Jr., who was nominated by Congressman Sears as midshipmen at Annapolis, Maryland, where he is now receiving his training; and JOHN DIXON, who is attending school. Mr. Evans has worked hard for the success which he has attained, and is proud of the fact that he has earned all he possesses. His business is in a flourishing condition and his commercial rating is of the highest, as is his standing in his community.
