This file may not be removed from this server or altered in any way for placement on another server without the consent of the State and USGenWeb Project coordinators and the contributor. *********************************************************************** GEORGE TROUPE MAXWELL George Troupe Maxwell, of Jacksonville, Florida, was born in Bryan county, Georgia, August 06, 1827, his father being Colonel John Jackson Maxwell, planter, who repeatedly represented his county in the State Senate. His maternal grandfather was Colonel John Baker, an officer distinguished in the Revolutionary War, and after whom Baker County, Georgia, was named. His ancestors, both paternal and maternal, were intimately associated with the early history, Colonial and State, of Georgia. His preliminary education was received at Chetham Academy, Savannah, from whence he proceeded to the University of New York, taking his degree of M. D. in the medical department of that institution in 1848. He established himself in practice at Tallahassee, where he remained until 1857, when he was appointed Surgeon to the Marine Hospital at Key West.... In April, 1861, he entered the Confederate Army as a private, serving for four months in the First Florida Regiment... the battle of Mission Ridge, when he was captured , sent north and imprisoned on Johnston's Island until March 1865...
