JAMES MARVIN PEELER, judge of the Criminal Court of Record for Duval County, has made a distinguished record as a lawyer of the Jacksonville bar, and has practiced in the courts of the state for over twenty years. Judge Peeler was born at Gainesville, Florida, June 13, 1876, son of THEODORE and ELIZABETH (GIBSON) PEELER. His father was born in Rowan County, North Carolina, September 22, 1848, and was a child when his father, SOLOMON J. PEELER, brought the family to Florida. SOLOMON J. PEELER was born in North Carolina, March 13, 1813, and lived to a ripe old age. He was a slave owner and cotton and tobacco planter. The family located in Alachua County, Florida. THEODORE PEELER was educated in the public schools of that county, and spent his active life in general farming, growing cotton, raising cattle and horses, and handling high-grade stock. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and a democrat in politics. He died December 12, 1881. His wife died February 1, 1881. They were married January 5, 1871, and they had a family of two sons and two daughters, two of them now living, James M., being the third child. Judge Peeler attended public school at Gainesville, and was also educated in the East Florida Seminary. At the age of twenty he began teaching, and continued school work for about six years. In the meantime he studied law, and was admitted to the bar by examination in 1901. In 1903 Judge Peeler located at Jacksonville, and had a busy private practice until he went on the bench. In 1908 he was elected member of the Jacksonville City Council, and was serving his third term in that body when he was appointed judge of the Criminal Court of Record for the County by Governor PARK TRAMMELL in 1913. Judge Peeler is now in his third term as judge in the Criminal Court, having been elected in 1917 and reelected in 1921. He is a member of the County Bar and the Florida State Bar Association. He is affiliated with Island Grove Lodge No. 125, F. and A. M., also the Knights of Pythias and the Woodmen of the World, is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and in politics is a democrat. June 15, 1905, he married MADGE B. FIELD, a native of Alachua County, Florida, daughter of C. G. and SUSAN E. FIELD. She is the second in a family of three daughters and two sons. Judge and Mrs. Peeler have five children: ELIZABETH, MARGARET, JESSE MARIE, JAMES M., Jr., and ANDERSON.
