ROBERT G. SJOSTROM. Associated for many years with big men in large affairs in New York City, as an attorney and expert public accountant, Mr. Sjostrom since transferring his residence to Florida has become recognized as one of the foremost men of thought and action in this state. His home is at Jacksonville, but his interests and influence in connection with business and other affairs extends as far south as Miami. Mr. Sjostrom is of Swedish birth and of Scotch-Swedish ancestry. He was eight years of age when his parents came to America and located in Canada. From Canada they subsequently removed to Massachusetts. His father was at one time recognized as one of the leading authorities on the textile and dye industry in Sweden and in the New England states. He removed to Florida in 1897 to spend his declining years, and invested heavily in the development projects around Miami, including Hallandale P. ROBERT G. SJOSTROM received his early education in Canada, attending Sherbrooke Academy, and at the age of fourteen began a technical and practical course in the manufacture of woolens. In 1881 he was graduated from the law department of McGill University at Montréal, and was admitted to the bar of Québec. A year later he accompanied his parents when they removed to Lawrence, Massachusetts. In 1882 he established his headquarters in New York City, and became active in mercantile accounting and financing. At one time he was treasurer and financial executive for several large corporations, with factories in New England and the State of New York. During twenty-nine years of residence in New York City, Mr. Sjostrom occupied many responsible positions as chief accountant and director in mercantile and banking institutions, and was associated with some of the notable men of finance and business there. Mr. Sjostrom’s father died at Miami at the ripe age of eighty years, in 1914. The son was called to Florida to settle the estate and his residence here has been continuous since that time. Mr. Sjostrom is an indefatigable worker, is a man of remarkable physical energy and has a rare gift of combining physical endurance with mental resourcefulness so as to accomplish an immense volume of work. It is his habit to arise at four o’clock in the morning, and work without interruption until midday. It is during this period that he accomplishes all the work requiring inspiration or keen judgment. He is a polished and cultured gentleman as well as an able attorney, and is easily one of the leading attorneys of Jacksonville. His business interests cover enterprises of wide scope and importance, and to handle them more expeditiously he established another office at Miami, and has an elaborate suite of rooms in the Miami National Bank Building. When America entered the war with Germany his son volunteered, and Mr. Sjostrom himself took the civil service examination, passing with the highest grade among the applicants from Florida. He was selected as deputy collector of internal revenue under J. M. CATHCART, was made chief of the income-tax division and held that office until the close of the war. In the meantime he had been admitted to the bar after examination before the Florida Supreme Court. While still in the Government war service he was commissioned by the commissioner of internal revenue to go to Washington to audit excess profit tax returns, and while there was in charge of one of the units of auditors for the board of tax reviewers for six months. After his special war service Mr. Sjostrom, in 1919, opened his office at Jacksonville for the practice of law and accounting. He has specialized in income tax procedure, and his practice in that field covers the entire state. He organized the Jacksonville Audit Company, which has since been succeeded by the Sjostrom Audit Company, specializing in corporation law and accounting. By exact knowledge and all around resourcefulness there is probably no specialist in Florida better equipped for service as a financial and legal advisor in everything affecting corporations and individuals through the income tax rules. Mr. Sjostrom is a member of the National Association of Certified Public Accountants of Washington, District of Columbia, and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. He is a member of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, in national politics is republican, and is affiliated with the Masonic fraternity, Morocco Temple of the Mystic Shrine, and the B. P. O. E. He is a member of the Civitan Club and other representative civic and social organizations at Jacksonville, and is senior warden of the vestry of St. Mary’s Protestant Episcopal Church. In 1883 at Elizabeth, New Jersey, Mr. Sjostrom married Miss EMMA IRENE WRIGHT. Her death occurred in 1912, and three children survive, two being residents of the State of New York, while the older son, PAUL R. G. SJOSTROM, lives at Miami. In 1915 Mr. Sjostrom married Miss HELEN IDA FLANAGAN at Miami. They have two children.
