It has been abandoned by the city. It is often confused with Old City Cemetery. OSJ is right by old cemetery. It has been established that it belongs to the Catholic church. Our group has restored many of the headstoned and cleaned them. We have met with a group: city planner, police, JEA, Councilman, Dr. Gaffney, Father Murphy(IC Catholic Church). Who We Are The Friends of Old St. Joseph's Cemetery is a group of volunteers who advocate for the restoration, preservation and maintenance of this historic cemetery. Because the cemetery has fallen into disrepair through neglect and vandalism, we believe that an essential part of Jacksonville's early history is being lost. Established in 1852, Old St. Joseph's on East Union Street, is one of the most overlooked and underrated historic sites in Jacksonville's urban core. What We Do The Friends meet to set goals for the cemetery, discuss progress, plan fundraisers, seek potential donors, attend educational workshops, and build awareness of St. Joseph's as a historical and cultural landmark. What We Need The Friends need resources such as financial assistance, as well as expertise in cemetery restoration and preservation, in order to save this important landmark for future generations. Origin of Old City Cemetery "Steamboat captain Charles Willey purchased 276 acres northeast of Downtown Jacksonville in 1842 from John Warren. In the spring of 1852, Charles and Frances L. Willey donated four acres of this property to the Town of Jacksonville for use as a public cemetery. Located on the north side of Hogans Creek, the square parcel measured 420 feet on each side. In the deed, Captain Willey also provided an easement through his property for public access to the cemetery. In response to his generous donation, the Town Council on June 18, 1852 voted to give Captain Willey a cemetery lot of his choice and on July 16, 1852, voted to officially designate the property as the Willey Cemetery. At the same time, the town had one half of the cemetery property surveyed under the direction of a Cemetery Committee that also advertised and sold lots. Ironically, Captain Charles and Frances Willey were not buried in the Old City Cemetery but in the New Berlin Cemetery located in the small riverfront community at Dames Point. Although officially named Willey Cemetery and sometimes called the Oakland Cemetery after the surrounding neighborhood, over the years, it has come to be commonly recognized as the Old City Cemetery. After donating property for the Old City Cemetery, Captain Willey donated or sold in 1858 an additional acre to the east for use by the Catholic diocese. Called St. Joseph's Cemetery, this parcel was expanded by another acre and is separated from the Old City Cemetery to the west by a public right-of-way now called Cemetery Street. According to Lucy Ames Edwards in her publication, Grave Markers of Duval County, 1808 -1916, (1955), the property was purchased by Reverend P. DeFoe for use by members of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Downtown Jacksonville. St. Joseph's Cemetery is racially and ethnically mixed as evident by the presence of African-American, Irish, and Minorican burials. At least ten Sisters of St. Joseph are buried in the Cemetery. The Sisters of St. Joseph initially came to Florida during the 1860s from Le Puy, France to serve the spiritual and educational needs of freed slaves. They opened and operated several schools that enrolled children of varying races and ethnic backgrounds. The oldest grave in St. Joseph's Cemetery is that of Mariana V. Pons who died in February of 1827. She was probably a member of one of the many families from Minorca and other parts of the Mediterranean that settled in New Smyrna as part of Andrew Turnbull's indigo plantation during the British Period (1763 - 1783). Because of harsh living conditions and cruel treatment, the Minorcans rebelled against Turnbull and relocated to St. Augustine in 1777. Other Minorcan surnames found in the cemetery include Andreau, Canova, Genovar, Ponce, Rogero, Segui, Trei,Triay, Gutierrez, Lopez, and Hernandez. They probably represented family members who lived or owned land in nearby communities including Jacksonville, Mayport, Pilot Town, Mandarin, and Bayard. African Americans buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery include at least one slave who died in 1860 and several Union veterans. Numerous indigent burials are found in what is termed, "free ground." Ownership of St. Joseph's Cemetery has not been confirmed by property records; however, the Dioceses of St. Augustine has claimed ownership. In response to citizen complaints about the lack of maintenance and vandalism, the City of Jacksonville has and continues to maintain the St. Joseph's Cemetery as part of its care for the Old City Cemetery." Source: Designation Application and Report of the Planning and Development Department of the City of Jacksonville Regarding Proposed Designation of Old City Cemetery LS-10-01 Note: As of this writing, neither the Dioceses of St. Augustine nor the City of Jacksonville claim responsibility for stewardship of the cemetery. The City of Jacksonville claims responsibility for yearly grounds clean up only. Marlene and I took the old, typed index provided by Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and put it into a spreadsheet. We also physically went to the cemetery and compared headstones to the old index. We made corrections and additions based on our findings........"Jo Ann Orren" LAST FIRST MIDDLE MAIDEN BIRTH DEATH AGE REMARKS SECTION BLK LOT VISUAL Unknown Unknown 6/5/1820 1/9/1892 Marker shows only "Mother" SE X Unknown Alma NW X Unknown Joseph Cannot read SW Unknown Laura 8/18/1860 1 Colored slave; per IC index 8/19/1860 Unknown Mary 9/1/1881 Unknown Walter "Little Walter" SW X Unknown Unknown In Memory of the Best Grandmother That Ever Lived NW Acosta George A. 12/2/1892 12/31/1917 25 S/o Mrs. J.
