The convention was called to order by Comrade William Fox Adjutant of Marion County Camp No 56 UCV. By way of explanation he read the following Headquarters United Confederate Vets New Orleans La Nov 28 1891 1. As far as men camps in the state of Florida has been admitted into the fellowship of this organization in conformity with paragraph 2 Article 2 of the Constitution the General Command hereby forms a division of that state. 2. The camps now belonging to this organization in said Division of Florida and all camps organized and admitted before the date of election, will at once elect delegates to assemble at Ocala Fla, on Wednesday, the 16th day of December next to elect a Major General for that Division. 3. The representatives of the various camps at said meeting will be in conformity with Art 3 of the Constitution and the amendment to the same, one delegate to every 20 members, and one additional for a fraction of 20. 4. The General Commanding expresses the hope that veterans all over Florida will organize camps immediately (and) join this organization, so they can participate in this election for Major General. By order J. B. Gorden Genl Cemdy Geo Merman Adj Gen & Chf of Staff The convention then organized by electing Capt John B Johnson president pro tem and William Fox secretary. The president appointed Commo Mervin Levy Davis a committee on credentials with instructions to report immediately. After deliberation the Committee reported that they found the following camps and representatives present and entitled to seats in the convention. Camp Ward No 10 6 votes Comm Geo Reece and Wm R. W. Lancaster, Wm Fox, G M Saussy Pasco Camp No 57 - 5 votes J. B. Johnson G T Davis, B. L. Ray R E Lee Camp No 58- 5 votes C. E Merrill, Geo Troup Maxwell, C. P. Cooper Patten Anderson Camp No 59 - 5 votes W. C. Bird On motion the report of the committee was received and adopted and the committee discharged. On motion it was ordered that the representatives present cast the vote of their camp. On motion the temporary organization was made permanent. On motion Mesdames E. W. Agnew, F. G. Rogers, J. J. Dickinson, L Dozier, S. W. Gary, J. J. Finley, Rob Bullock, J. W. F Dunn, and C J Allerd were invited to seats in the stage and the President appointed Comrades Marten (JM) Cooper Jewell, Mervill Reese, Cohen Bird and Ray to escort the ladies. A communication from Col Chipley was read expressing his regrets at his inability to attend. A telelgram called him to New York. On motion the convention declared the election of Maj General for Florida Division U. C. V the next business in order. Co. W. C. Bird in most fitting terms nominated Genl J. J. Dickinson. The nomination was seconded by Col R. P. Cooper of R. E. Lee camp., Col W. H. Jewell nominated Gen L. D. French nomination seconded. There being no other nominations the convention proceeded to vote …….. As the roll of camps was called as follows Ward Camp #10 Pensacola 6 votes for Dickinson W. W. Lening #13 Brooksville 4 votes for Dickinson Hillsborough #36 Tampa 7 votes for A J Russell Indian River #47 Titusville 3 “ “ Dickinson Orange County #54 Orlando 3 “ “ French Marion “ #56 Ocala 5 “ “ Dickinson Pasco “ #57 Dade City 5 “ “ “ R E Lee #58 Jacksonville 5 “ “ “ J Patten Andersen 59 Montecello 5 “ “ “ Comrade Mervin stated when he cast the vote of his camp the he had a duty to perform and in its performance would cast the 7 votes for A J. Russell as ….. As the …. Vote was such, he rose and asked permission to perform the second duty imposed on him, there of with drawing the vote Maj Russell and casting it for Genl Dickinson. Col Cooper moved to make the election un (page eaten) memo but before the motion … (page eaten) Jewell change the vote of Orange f (page eaten) French W Dickinson thus making the election unanimous one and seconded Col (page eaten) motion which was carried with (page eaten) enthusiansm. The chair appointed Cols Bird Martin and Jewell to escort the General to the stage. Capt Johnson, the chairman, introduced the Commander in his most felicities style and General Dickinson was greeted with a perfect storm of yells as soon as quiet was mastered he protested against his election but pledged himself to do all in his power to make the Florida Division one of the best in the U. C. A. On motion one member from each camp was selected to form a state historical committee the delegates naming the committee man from each camp. Comrad Robertson moved to amend by adding “ to the words from each camp “new organized or that may hereafter be organized the amendment was accepted and the following were named. Pensacola No 10 C.
