Mr. Ernest Amos, Comptroller, at Tallahassee, Fla. Hon. Sir: A refusal of Pension Claim was forwarded me, having been sent by % Mrs. McLallen, Orlando, Florida, -- the address on the forwarded envelope and heading of letter is Mrs. W. C. Bright, the name Bright has never been in our family in any way --- so a mistake has been made somewhere, and it is possible a Mrs. Bright is anxiously swaiting what was sent me. In any event a letter of such importance might cause complications, as such papers are filed. If the letter was intended for me I understand from it that my Claim failed to pass the Board on account of more proof is desired of Service, of W. C. Adams, from August 2nd, 1864, to close of War. I am enclosing copy of letter from Commander Evans, Lee Camp, Richmond, VA., date of august 5th, and you have the original Certificate from that Camp sent me in 1904, which both states, repeats the record that W. C. Adams enlisted in 1861 in Custis Lee’s Batalion and served until close of War. So two Commanders, Gen. DeSaussure of Memphis, and Commander Evans of Richmond, think the proof is “all that could be asked for”, both stating that it is almost impossible to find a living comrade. I have again written Commander Evans, R. E. Lee Camp, Richmond, asking for a sworn affidavit stating the --- *********************************************************************** Correctness of their Rolls; the late Adjutant, J. Taylor Stratton, was a friend of my husband, W. C. Adams, and I knew him from childhood. (I married W. C. Adams in 1867 --- a runaway marriage --- objection of parents, youth, but, I am one of a very few who have their Marriage Certificate after 65 years.) We lived continuously in Richmond, VA., our birth-place, until his death in May 19th, 1895, -- he is buried in Hollywood Cemetery, overlooking JEFF. DAVIS CIRCLE. Then the change, later, to the climate of Florida has added years to the life of my daughter a life-long invalid, and to myself. God bless Florida. Also I have written the Pension board in Richmond, and am writing the Historical Society in Richmond for any proof they may have, as you say: “The Board will be glad to reconsider your claim upon receipt of more proof of service”. I suppose a sworn affidavit from Lee Camp would be undisputed proof that Mr. W. C. Adams served until end of War? 99per cent of our Boys in Gray have Passed Over. As his widow I might have been getting this pension for the past 37 years, --- I didn’t need it, ---I need it now, --- since the death of my only son, last March 12th, he was one of the best, finest men I ever knew remained a Bachelor 37 years to fill his Bond to his widowed Mother, and four sisters all of whom are now widows, except one and her husband has been a helpless invalid for 20 years --- unable to feed himself, and, --- --- God took my Son without a moments warning. (I am a lineal descendant of Capt. Whittier Campbell, who was uncle to Gen. Wm. Campbell, Rev. War, who scaled King’s Mountain in the face of Furgeson’s bravery, and won American Independence, -- I must inheret my perseverance from him. -- I will persevere to prove that my husband was not a Deserter to our Confederate Army, and that his widow has a right to a Pension.) My address will remain the same until I inform you; -- am hoping to get back to beautiful Florida, somehow, -- we are not well here, and we cannot trespass on visiting. Our records are very incomplete. However, it appears to me that the Washington record, a copy of which you enclosed with your letter, ought to be sufficient for the Florida Pension Department, because it shows that on the last roll on file in Washington, 1864, his name appears. No later record is found because no later roll was found, due to incompleteness, or by destruction of the records the latter part of the war. A certificate also from Headquarters R. E.
