Scott, Sr. was born on December 27, 1893 in Birmingham, MS and died on October 17, 1964 in Pensacola, FL. He was the son of Samuel Augustus Scott and Malissa Belle West. His paternal grandparents were William Scott and Martha Allen Bryson. His maternal grandparents were Robert Adam West and Dolly Sargent. Mr. Scott had one sister, Ruby Irene Scott, who was born on January 24, 1897 in Bethany, MS and died on October 13, 1982 in Memphis, TN. She did not marry, and lived most of her adult life in Humboldt, TN. Mr. Scott married Lucy Roberta Sansom on August 20, 1920 in Okolona, MS. She was the daughter of John Dale Sansom and Lucy Roberta Haughton. Her paternal grandparents were William Carter Sansom and Martha Hand Dale. Her maternal grandparents were Patrick H. Haughton and Ann Louisa Gunn. Mr. Scott attended the University of Mississippi, where he played football, and was a veteran of World War I. While employed by the power company in Baldwyn, MS, Mr. Scott was awarded the Carnegie Medal of Bravery for saving the life of a co-worker, who was shocked while working on a power line. Mr. and Mrs. Scott moved to Pensacola, FL in 1938 from Baldwyn, MS. Mr. Scott was employed by Gulf Power Company, where he advanced to Electrical Engineer and Manager of Retail Operations. He retired from Gulf Power in 1959. He was involved in numerous civic organizations in Pensacola. He was a member of the Recreation Board for 20 years, serving as its chairman for many of those years. He also served as President of the Pensacola Sports Association, Chairman of the U.S.O. Board, President of the Lions Club, and the YMCA Board of Directors. He was a member of the Ole Miss Alumni Association and First United Methodist Church. According to an October 21, 1964 article written by the editorial staff of "The Pensacola Journal" (page 4A), Mr. Scott was considered to be, "a leader in laying the foundation for and expanding the excellent recreation program that is conducted by the city of Pensacola. It is fitting that the new tennis center on Summit Boulevard bears his name, for it will perpetuate the memory of one of a number of men who contributed interest, thought, time and effort to the well rounded program now in effect to strengthen and entertain young people. His going saddens many who knew him for his sterling character and his untiring endeavors for others". Mr. and Mrs. Scott had five children: Roger Q. Scott, Jr., who married Lou Peveto; Frances Dale Scott, who married Joe J. Harrell, Sr.; Lucy Belle Scott, who married William Frank Crawford; William Samuel ("Bill") Scott, Sr., who married Gloria Odom; and Nancy Faye Scott. Mr. and Mrs. Scott are buried in a family plot at Bayview Cemetery in Pensacola, FL with the following family members: Ruby Scott, Roger and Lou Scott, Joe and Dale Harrell, and William ("Bill") Scott.
