One Thousand Nine Hundred and Nine, personally appeared before me, a Notary Public in and for the County and State aforesaid Bartilla Emma Clifton, a resident of Century County of Escambia, State of Florida, who being duly sworn according to law, make the following declaration in order to obtain pension under the provisions of Chapter 5885, Laws of Florida, approved June 7, 1909. That she is the widow of Hawkins Clifton, who was enlisted under the name of Hawkins Clifton, on the first day of October, 1861, in Company "H" 23rd. Alabama Regiment of the State of Alabama and who was honorably discharged at Raleigh N.C., April 7th, 1865 on account of the end of the Civil war. That he also served on detail as a member of the pioneer corps part of the in fact was in this service when the war closed. That she was lawfully married to the said Hawkins Clifton, under the name of Matilda Renfroe, in the County of Monroe, State of Alabama on the 22nd day of April, 1867, and that she was not divorced from him and that she has not remarried since his death, which occurred on the about the year 1886, in the County of Santa Rosa State of Florida. That she is a resident of Escambia County, Florida and has continuously resided in the State of Florida since the last twenty years. (page missing) Brooklyn in the State of Alabama, on the 1st day of October 1861, in Company "H", 23rd. Alabama Regiment of the State of Alabama which organization was regularly mustered into the service of the Confederate States of American; that he know of his own personal knowledge that Hawkins Clifton enlisted in Company "H", 23rd. Alabama Regiment of the State of Alabama Volunteers at Brooklyn in the State of Alabama, on the 1st day of October, 1861; that he served faithfully in the said organization until the 7th day of April A.D. 1865, when he was honorably discharged on account of the end of the Civil War at Raleigh in the State of North Carolina, and did not desert the Confederate States service nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States before the close of the War. He was detailed on the pioneer Corps. on the line from Columbia S.C. to Raleigh N.C., he was in this service at the surrender. I know personally of the above stated service, because I served with him, Hawkins Clifton in Company "H", Regiment 23rd of the State of Alabama, and was honorable discharged at Raleigh in the State of N.C. on the 7th day of April, 1865, by reason of the end of the war and I did not desert the Confederate States service nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States before the close of the war. Sworn and subscribed before me this fifth day of November, A.D. 1909 and I hereby certify that the above declaration was fully made know to the affiant before swearing, and that I have no interest, direct or indirect, in the pension claim sought to be established by this declaration. Jones, a Notary-Public in and for the State and County aforesaid, personally came James J. Johnson, of Century County of Escambia, State of Florida who, being duly sworn according the law, declares that he is the identical person who enlisted at Evergreen, in the State of Alabama on the ___ day of November 1862 in Company "H" 23rd. Alabama Regiment of the State of Alabama which organization was regularly mustered into the service of the Confederate States of American; that he know of his own personal knowledge that Hawkins Clifton enlisted in Company "H", 23rd. Alabama Regiment of the State of Alabama Volunteers and was a member of said Company when I enlisted. in the State of Alabama, on the ___ day of ___, 186_; that he served faithfully in the said organization until about the 7th day of April A.D. 1865, when he was honorably discharged on account of the end of the Civil War at Raleigh in the State of North Carolina, and did not desert the Confederate States service nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States before the close of the War. He was detailed on the pioneer corps. during the latter part of 1861 and was in that service at the end of the war. I know personally of the above stated service, because I served with him, Hawkins Clifton in Company "H", Regiment 23rd of the State of Alabama, and was honorable discharged at Sallisbury, in the State of N.C. on the 8th day of May, 1865, by reason of the end of the war and I did not desert the Confederate States service nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States before the close of the war. Jones Notary-Public My Commission expires May 14th. 1910. ********************************* State of Alabama Department of Archives and History Montgomery 16 November 1955 My dear Mrs. Glover: Referring to a request from Miss Roumelle Bowan, Secretary of the State Board of Pensions, for a C.S.A. record of Hawkins Clifton, said to have served in Company H, 23rd Alabama Infantry, his name is not found in our index of Confederate soldiers. We have no rosters or muster rolls of that outfit and are not able to verify the fact that he served in said company. It is regretted that we cannot assist you. Very truly, Peter A. Brannon Director CC to Miss Roumelle Bowen, Sec'y Pension Department State of Florida Tallahassee, Florida Mrs. Clara Glover 1421 Galveston Avenue, Port Arthur, Texas ***************************************** November 15th, 1955 TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I, Roumelle Bowen, Secretary, State Board of Pensions, hereby certify that the records in the Comptroller's Office, Confederate Pension Department, show that Mrs. Bartilla Emma Clifton, Century, Escambia County, Fla., received a Confederate pension from the State of Florida based on services rendered by her husband, Hawkins Clifton, in Company :H:, 23rd Alabama Regiment, C. S. A. He is shown to have enlisted on the first day of October, 1861, in Company H, 33rd Alabama Regiment and served until discharged at Raleigh, N.C. on April 7th, 1865. He was on detail as a member of the pioneer Corps, part of the time, on the line from Columbia, S.C. to Raleigh, N.C. and was in this service at the surrender. For proof of war service, Mrs. Wiggins furnished the affidavits of two comrades serving with him, James J. Johnson and John A. Wiggins of said Company. The records also show that Hawkins Clifton and Matilda Renfroe were married in the County of Monroe, State of Alabama, on April 22, 1867, and he died about the year of 1886, in the County of Santa Rosa, State of Florida.
