"RL" was born November 6 1932 in Pensacola Florida to the late Roy D and Mable M Straughn. He attended schools in Pensacola and joined the Army in January 1953 serving until January 1974. An American Patriot, he served his country with tours in Korea and in Vietnam. Some of the medals he was awarded were as follows, The Purple Heart, Bronze star, Army commendation medal and the Presidential Unit Citation. After retiring from the Army he worked 13 years for Borden Dairy as supervisor in the production department. He had a deep love for fishing and could always be found by the water. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years Betty Jean Straughn, his parents, Roy D and Mable M. Straughn, and two sisters, Louise Snell and Brenda Sue Sparks. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Tina ( Chester) Stewart his two granddaughters Jessica Resendez and Jennifer Pitts; his sister, Anne (Willie Frank) McKinney; his seven great grandchildren, Christian , Zachary, Michael, Jordan, Bailey, Destiny and Jaide; and many other family and friends. Visitation will be Sunday, July 8, 2012 from 6:30 PM till 8:30 PM at Pensacola Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 8:30 AM Monday, July 9, 2012 at Pensacola Baptist Temple with Reverend Glen Anderson officiating. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Covenant Hospice at West Florida Hospital or to the Pensacola Baptist Temple . The family extends a special 'Thank You' to all the staff at Covenant Hospice for the excellent care given to Roy L. and his family.
