Captain Joseph F. Baya was born at St. Augustine in 1846, and when but 15 years of age, joined the Grayson Artillery, which rendered its first service at old Fort Marion, at St. Augustine. He served with this company until May 1862 when he enlisted in Company D, Eighth Florida Infantry in which he served faithfully until captured at Gettysburg, July 30, 1863.
