FRANKLIN COUNTY, FLORIDA 1866 CENSUS

Governor William Dunn Moseley of Florida believed that
education was essential to the development and welfare
of the state of Florida.  He requested that the Florida
Legislature provide a system of "Common Schools,"
financed by the state, the individual counties, and the
local governments, and controlled by all three.  This
resulted in the Florida School Law of 1849.  Beginning
in 1850 the sheriff of each county was required by state
law to take a census of all school age children and send
the results to the local and state authorities.

The census for Franklin County, Florida was teken in 1866.
The head of house is listed by name with the number of
children between the ages of five and eighteen living in the
home.
