D., JULIUS CAESAR. In the important field of surgery few practitioners of Gadsden County have made more rapid strides in recent years than Dr. JULIUS CAESAR DAVIS, Jr. of Quincy. While his advancement has been of great personal gratification, his services have not been less important to his community, where at all times his skill has been at the command of whatever need has arisen. Doctor DAVIS was born at Clyde, North Carolina, June 27, 1886, and is a son of ZACHARY C. and LORA (NOLAND) DAVIS. He is a descendent of FRANK M. DAVIS, an early pioneer of Clyde, and a grandson of FRANK M. DAVIS, who was Sheriff of Hayward County, North Carolina, during the war between the states. ZACHARY C. DAVIS was born August 27, 1861, in the Old North State and has passed his career there as a planter, farmer, fruit grower and stockman. A man of industry and ability, he has won his way to a comfortable competence, is accounted one of the influential citizens of his community, where for ten years he served as United States revenue inspector. Fraternally he is affiliated with the Masons, his religious connection is with the Methodist Episcopal Church. JULIUS C. DAVIS was brought up on his father's farm, and reared in the midst of agricultural surroundings, but from boyhood it was his ambition to become a doctor and with this end in view he set about to gain the necessary training. After he had graduated from the Clyde High School he pursued a course at the Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, Tennessee, being given his Bachelor of Accountants degree as a member of the class of 1904. He then furthered his preparation by a course at the Atlanta (Georgia) Medical School, from which he was graduated in 1909 with the degree of Doctor of Medicine, and this was followed by two years of internship and postgraduate work in surgery before entering general work. In 1911 Dr. DAVIS came to Quincy and established himself in the practice of surgery, to which he has devoted himself to the present. He promoted and made possible the founding of the City Hospital of Quincy, a service of great benefit to this community and for which he is to be held in gratitude. Dr. DAVIS does postgraduate work every year and keeps abreast of his calling by attending clinics either at New York, Baltimore, New Orleans or with the Mayo brothers at Rochester, Minnesota. He has been city and county health officer since 1913, and has been prominent in the organizations of his profession, having been vice president of the Florida State Medical Society in 1913 and again in 1922; is a member of the Southern Medical Society, and is a Fellow of the American Medical Association. He is local surgeon for the G. F. & A. Railroad. During the World war he was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps, but his work as surgeon of the local draft board was considered of such importance that he was not allowed to enter active service. He took a prominent part in the Red Cross drives and in all other war activities. Doctor DAVIS is something of a dog fancier, and his principal diversion is bird hunting. As a fraternalist he belongs to the Elks, and is a member of the Washington Lodge No. 2, F. and A. M.; Gadsden Chapter No. 30, R. A. M.; St. Omer Commandery No.12, K. T., and Morocco Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. In 1911, at Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. DAVIS married Miss BONNIE MARQUARDT, who was born at Asheville, North Carolina, a daughter of L. P. and FRANCES (FULLAM) MARQUARDT, the former born at Havana, Illinois, and the latter at Asheville, North Carolina. Mr. MARQUARDT, who is one of the most prominent attorneys of Atlanta, where he is now serving as prosecuting attorney, was also former president of the Georgia State Federation of Labor, and for many years has been recording secretary of that body, as at present. Doctor and Mrs. DAVIS have three children: L. P., LORA FRANCES and JULIAN CARLISLE. Dr. DAVIS is known as Dr. J. C. DAVIS, Jr., because his uncle, J. C. DAVIS, for whom he is named, is also a medical and surgical practitioner.
