Page 009 Dec. 22nd, 1936. Hon. W. H. Mathis Cross City Florida Dear Mr. Mathis: I wish to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 19th with reference to the application for pension of Mr. Elias K. Roberts, and I will be glad to have you come over and talk with the Members of the Pension Board in connection with the application for pension in question, however, I do not think it advisable to try to meet with the Pension Board until some time in the New Year and I will be glad to write you just as soon as a date can be arranged. With best wishes, I am, Yours very truly Comptroller /B Page 010 Cross City Florida December 19th.1936. Hon.J.M.Lee,Comptroller of Florida. Tallahassee Florida. Dear Mr.Lee;- I am writing you concerning the matter of pension of Mr.Elias K. Roberts of Bell Florida. I am personally acquainted with this man and have been for a long, long while and know the conditions surrounding his claim. I would appreciate it verymuch (sic) if I may have the opportunity at some early date to come over to Tallahassee and talk over this matter with you and Mr.Knott together, I will say here that if there ever was a worthy cause for a pension for any man it certainly is his He is an invalid and has been for the past several years and is in need of the pension that he is asking for and is so justly entitled too (sic) receive. I assure you that if you will grant me the privelige (sic) of telling you about this matter in person that you will readily grant it. H. Matthis (signature) W.H.Matthis. Page 011 TRANSCRIBERS NOTE: This letter is probably in the wrong pension application file, since the letter refers to a Mr. Andrew J. Roberts, and this pension application file pertains to Elias K. Roberts. April 27th, 1936. Hon. Wm. C. Hodges Tallahassee Florida Dear Senator Hodges: Your letters of the 25th addressed to Hon. J. M. Lee, Comptroller, and Hon. W. V. Knott, Treasurer, have been referred to this Department for attention and reply. Upon examination of the application for pension filed by Mr. Andrew J. Roberts on April 6th, 1912, I find that his claim was denied because the records in Washington show that he enlisted Feb. 28th, 1862, was wounded at the battle of Sharpsburg September 17, 1862, and was furloughed. He does not appear to have returned to his company, on the latest roll of which, dated December 31, 1863, he was reported as a deserter. No proof was ever submitted by Mr. Roberts to disprove this charge and the Pension Board did not feel that they had the authority to place his name on the roll under the provisions of the General Pension Law which reads in part as follows: “Who Entitled to Pensions; Amount; Proviso.- Any person who enlisted and served in the military or naval service of the Confederate States dur- ing the war between the States of the United States, and did not desert the Confederate Ser- vice.” --- I am re-filing Mr. Roberts’ application for pension and will be glad to present it to the Pension Board at its next meeting and advise you of the action taken thereon. Yours very truly Secretary Pension Board. Page 012 April 26th, 1937. Hon. W. H. Mathis Cross City Florida Dear Mr. Mathis: Your request to appear before the Pension Board in connection with the application for pension of Mr. Elias K. Roberts was presented to the Board on April 22nd and the Board asked me to write you that just as soon as Legislature was over, that a date would be set at which time they would be glad to have you appear in connection with Mr. Roberts’ claim for pension now on file in the Pension Department. With best wishes, I am, Yours very truly Secretary State Board of Pensions /B Page 013 Wm. C. Hodges Tallahassee, Fla. April 25, 1936 18897 Honorable J. M.
