Yours very truly, Secretary State Pension Board /B Page 010 Feb. 27th, 1936. Mr. George W. Roberts Bell Florida Dear Mr. Roberts: With reference to your application for pension, I wish to advise that the matter was presented to the Pension Board at a meeting yesterday for their attention and after due consideration it was denied. With kind regards, I am, Yours very truly Secretary Pension Board /B Page 011 August 11th, 1931. Mr. O. Lamar Crocker Trenton, Florida. Dear Sir: I wish to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 7th. instant, enclosing affidavits in re: the war service of one, Mr. Geo. W. Roberts, which have been filed with his application for pension. I also note what you say with reference to the pension of Mr. Alfred E. Hodge. Both of these applications will be considered by the Pension Board and you will be notified if further proof is required, and then you can get up the proof required, and bring up when you come to the Pardon (sic) Board if you desire. Yours very truly, Comptroller /B Page 012 Note: The following letter is on letterhead of County of Gilchrist. Office of the Sheriff A. D. Fields, Sheriff COUNTY OF GILCHRIST (Florida State Seal) State of Florida Trenton August 7th, 1931. Hon.Ernest Amos, Comptroller, Tallahassee,Florida. Dear Mr.Amos:- I am now representing Mr .A. L. Hodge, now of Fort White, Florida, who was struck from the Pension Roll on the reccommendation (sic) of Mr. T. J. Watts, and Mr.George W. Roberts, of Bell, Florida, who has never been on the Pension Roll, tho, it seems, he has an application on file with the Board. I would appreciate the Board’s leaving these two applications, so that when I get up all the proof that I can, I can appear before the board in their behalf. I want to be over at the next Regular Meeting of the Pardon (sic) Board, and, if I possibly can, I would be glad to see the different Members of the Pension Board about these two matters, and probably another, tho in that time of rush I would not expect the Pension Board to hold a meeting. In the affidavit of Nancy Osteen, heretofore filed with the Pension Board in behalf of J. W. Harper, Sim Osteen, Wiley Hines and W. S. (Shade) Osteen, the affiant gives the same kind of testimony for A. L. Hodge, and a like condition presents itself in the affidavit of Mary Jane Colson heretofore filed in behalf of the same men. As can be seen from reading the two affidavits, which I enclose, which please have filed in the Claim of George W. Roberts, he only claims that he helped to amass supplies for the Confederate Army at the designated place. Mr. Roberts is an exceptionally honorable man, and it seems that there is no doubt of his doing what he claims to have done; and if the Board should hold a meeting and consider these affidavits before the Regular Session of the Pardon (sic) Board, I would appreciate being advised of what the Board thinks of this kind of service, as Mr. Roberts has nothing else on which to base his claim for a Pension. I do not know what I can get for these two men yet, but shall mail it in as soon as I get it. I hope you have recovered from the Legislature, and are enjoying the best of health. Very sincerely, O. Lamar Crocker (signature) Page 013 Marshall & Bruce Co. Nashville State of Florida. Union County. On this day before the undersigned authority personally appeared Callie Williams, a colored man, who, being duly sworn, says that he is eighty-four years of age and that he served in the Civil War by waiting upon his young master, Governor Perry’s son, and that he did not know Mr. George W. Roberts during the war, but has known him ever since soon after the war, and does not know whether Mr. Roberts helped in the war or not, but that he has heard Mr. Jesse Carter and Mr. Ben Tucker, both white man and both of whom were in the Confederate service with affiant, and both of whom are now dead, say that Mr. George W. Roberts helped gather and haul the supplies for the Confederate Army, that the citizens were forced to give it to the common store house on the old Richard place near Providence, now in Union County, Florida. On this day before me personally appeared Mrs. M. M. McKinney, who, being duly sworn says that she was born in 1850, and has lived at Lake Butler, Florida, and near thereto, ever since before the Civil War closed; that she has known George W. Roberts, now of Gilchrist County, Florida, for 67 years, or longer; that she remembers vividly the incidents of the Civil War; that she knows that the Confederate force levied on the citizens at home for supplies, and know that some of these supplies were stored in the vicinity of Providence, now in Union County, Florida; that she also knows of her own knowledge that the people in the community generally in their talks and conversations about the War, and the different men in it, said that the said George W. Roberts helped to haul the supplies collected by levy to the place where they were stored at or near what was then Providence, Florida, and that she never heard anyone say that the said George W. Roberts did not render such service, tho she does not know of her own knowledge that he rendered such service, but has always believed that he did; that she, said affiant helped to spin thread for the Confederate soldiers, and did other things to help out in the war- M. Page 019 PENSION CLAIM NO. 23704 GEO W. ROBERTS/ ADDRESS: BELL FLA. Claims to have enlisted in Captain Underwood’s Company. WITNESSES: J.A.Parish, and H.D.Douglas, of Bell Fla. These witnesses made affidavits as to Roberts’ service. INVESTIGATION: At the interview with Geo.W.Roberts, on the 16th. day of Feb’y. 1931. he was first warned of the danger some of the men claiming service in Underwood’s Company. were placing themselves, by swearing falsely as to their age and service. When in readiness to take down Mr. Roberts sworn statement as to his service, I was surprised when he frankly admitted that he never enlisted or served in Underwood’s Company, or any other company during the war. The only thing he did, was to be present one day at a drill practice of Captain Williams’ Company, and saw the drill. His father was a member of Williams Company. Mr. Roberts volunteered the information that W.C.Walker; his brother in law; E.K.Roberts, his cousin, and Alfred L.Hodge, now on the Pension Roll, had obtained their Pensions through fraudulent misrepresentations as to their ages and service. Also, that E.K.Robert’s father, deserted the Confederate Army. Mr. Roberts having made a clean confession- and acquitted himself, the interview was short, and soon closed by signing up the enclosed affidavit. Roberts said he was solicited to make the claim for a pension by Hiram Sanders. He seems to regret that he made the application. This is one case that may be closed without the danger of any questions being asked. Mr. Roberts will be glad to know that the matter has been closed. G.W.Roberts; J.A.Parish, and H.B.Douglas-have all committed perjury. Parish is dead. Douglas is on the Pension Roll. He ought to be dropped from the roll and prosecuted. Yours truly, 2/24/31. T.J.W. Before me a Notary Public in and for the State of Florida at large, personally appeared this the 16th day of February 1931, George W. Roberts, who being duly sworn according to law, deposes and says: “I am eight years old. I was born the 27th day of April 1850. I never enlisted or served in Captain Fernando Underwoods Company of Home Guards organized at Nunansville, Alachua County, Florida. I never served in the regular army or any other organization connected with the Civil War. During the war I substituted for N. A. I think it was Williams Company or Dickerson’s Company. I took no active part, but did learn something by seeing the men drill. I never had any thing to do with the Civil War except as stated above. My father gave one tenth of all he made on his farm to the support of the men in the army. Referring to W. C. Walker, who is drawing a State pension: Walker married my sister.
