Re: William Taft Green And Captain F. A. Hendry Dear Mrs. Wright: I have your letter of April 16th with reference to the services rendered during the War Between the States by William Taft Green and Captain Francis Asbury Hendry. I am enclosing herewith application for pension filed by Mr. W. T. Green on January 10, 1901, and his application was approved on Sept. 4, 1901, and he stated in his claim for pension that he enlisted in Captain G. Wiley's Company in Henry County, Alabama, 57th Regiment, that he was wounded in the left leg near New Hope Church, Ga., while on picket duty. For proof of war service, he furnished the affidavits of two comrades serving with him. Photocopy of his application is enclosed herewith for your information. I am also enclosing photocopy of Captain F. A. Hendry's claim for pension which may add to the historical record in completing the application for U. D. C. you mentioned in your letter. I sincerely hope that the Chapter you refer to prospers and that many will join this new Chapter and make it one of the best. With best wishes, I am, Yours very truly Ray E. Green, Comptroller By: W. Hoffman Chief Auditor Confederate Pensions /RB ******************************************************************************************* United States Senate Committee On Appropriations 421 Senate Office Building Washington 25, D. C. Dear Roumelle: I'm still spending a great deal of my time at the Library of Congress and down at Archives. And finally came across something of a lead. I have been trying to get the war records, as you know, of my two grandfathers. When you were here and Chrys was working with you, she tried to find out something about them at the Archives but couldn't find a record. I got hold of the book at the Library, entitled "Soldiers of Florida in the Seminole-Indian- Civil and Spanish-American Wars," prepared and published under the Supervision of the Board of State Institutions as authorized by Chapter 2203, Laws of Florida, approved May 14, 1903." And I find the following, on the pages noted: Page 40 "The old guards were mustered into the service of the State by Captain Joseph M. Taylor, March 29, 1862. After three months, of service, they were mustered out under General Order No. IX, by Capt. Joseph M. Taylor at Brookville, Fla." . . . and listed in the Enlisted Men was Frierson, Aaron T. (my mother's grandfather) Mustered in March 29, 1862; Mustered out May 17, 1862 Page 316 - "Roll Capt. F. A. Hendry's Company - Independent Cavalry" - listed Capt. F. A. Hendry but gave no dates although dates of some of the enlisted men under him were given as approx. April 1, 1863 - April '65. I would appreciate anything you could do to get me any records on either of the above two grandfathers. I do know that my great grandfather Frierson attained the rank of Major (either in Florida or in South Carolina) as he was always called "Major" and one book I have read recently states that he attained the rank of Major in the Civil War. If there is any possibility of getting photostatic copies, etc. of the records, I would appreciate your seeing to it and letting me know the price and I will gladly reimburse you. In the meantime, if we can help you here, we - Senator Holland and the staff- will be so happy to help you. (Marge and Helen send best regards.) Sincerely, Ruth Knight ******************************************************************************************* June 11, 1958 Mrs. Ruth Knight 421 Senate Office Bldg Washington, D. C. Re: Capt. F. A. Hendry And Aaron T. Frierson Dear Ruth: I am so glad you wrote me about Captain F. A. Hendry's service during the War Between the States, whose record is shown in part on page 316 of "Soldiers of Florida". I am enclosing herewith copy of Captain F. A. Hendry's application for pension approved Jan. 17, 1908, with pay from Oct. 15, 1907, date of filing. You will note Captain Hendry's statement concerning his Company at the bottom of a letter addressed to him by J. Hamilton Williams asking the name of his regimental Command and his reply that he was a member of Col. J. C. Munnerlynn's Bat. which indicates that Capt. Hendry's Company was a part of Munnerlynn's Bat. of Florida, C. S. A. I think a story should be written about Hendry's Company but it would take a great deal of research and some scouting around to get enough information to do this. I have been unable to locate anything more about Aaron T. Frierson of Captain Joseph M. Taylor's Company. Any time I can be of service to you or any one in Senator Holland's Office, will be a pleasure and I will be looking forward to hearing from you. With best wishes to you, Senator Holland and all the folks in his office, I am Sincerely Secretary State Board of Pensions /RB
