Claims to have been a member of Company D, (Wakulla Guards) 3rd Fla. Inf., Confederate States Army, and to have been in Battles of Tennessee, etc. This information is very much need on account of the fact that his widow has been unable to furnish proof of the service sufficient to establish her claim, although there are soldiers who know that he did serve and was Honorably Discharged, but not officially proven. Please furnish me with the record of this soldier. Yours very truly, Ernest Amos Comptroller ******************************************************************************************* War Department, The Adjutant General's Office Washington March 10, 1926 Respectfully returned to Comptroller, Department of Pensions, State of Florida, Tallahassee, Florida The records show that Wright W. Blocker Regarding The Service Of Wright W. Walker, in the Confederate Army. State of Florida County of Leon Before me, a Notary Public, duly authorized to take acknowledgements, came this day John R. Blocker, to me well known to be the party who signed this affidavit, and who deposes and says; That he was well acquainted with Wright W. Walker, of Waukulla County, who was living at their home in Newport, in the beginning of the Civil war, and that the said Wright W. Walker enlisted in Frierson's Company, and served in the Western army for some two years, when he understands he was discharged. That he met the said Wright W. Walker on the streets of Tallahassee soon after his discharge and that at that time the said Wright W. Walker was hard of hearing to the extent that he would place his hand behind his ear in order to understand. That in his opinion this defect in hearing was sufficient to have excused him from further enlistment. That he heard at the time, and believe that Wright W. Walker was in the battle of Natural Bridge, near the close of the war, though he did not see him at that fight. That deponent was in the Confederate Army and in the battle of Natural Bridge. That he was well acquainted with Wright W. Walker from childhood, and knew him until the time of his death, and believes that there is no question about the record of the said Wright W. Walker being such as to entitle his service to be accepted as basis for State pension for his widow. John R. Blocker (L.S.) Sworn to and subscribed before me this the 22nd day of March, A. D. 1926. F. E. Willis Notary Public ******************************************************************************************* Wakulla, Fla. March 25th 1926 This is to certify that I am a resident of Newport, Fla., where I have resided since 1851, and that while assisting my father in manufacturing various products for the Confederate army, I saw Wright W. Walker, and his company arrive in Newport, (it was on Sunday afternoon) to defend this place against invasion of Union soldiers; that he spent the night here and was rushed to Natural Bridge early the next morning, where he made a gallant fight in what is known as the "Battle of Natural Bridge". G. W. Ladd Witnesses: R. F. ? Walter Page Before me H. L. Burnett, a Notary Public of the State of Florida at large, appeared George W. Ladd, and makes oath that the above statement is true. H. L. Burnett Notary Public ******************************************************************************************* Affidavit of R. Don McLeon In Connection With Pension Claim of The Widow, W. W. Walker State of Florida, Wakulla County I, R. Don McLeon, hereby certify that I knew Wright W. Walker, of Crawfordville, Florida, several years before his death. I frequently talked to him about his service in the Civil war. He stated to me after his discharge from the army of Tennessee that he was at home looking after his mother's slaves and business affairs, and also assisting at the Confederate Salt Works. This fact, while not known to me personally was corroborated by some affidavits that Captain W. W. Walker made before me many years ago, as the basis or proof of certain facts when Jim Gavin (a negro), applied for Federal pension. In this proof of Gavin's for Federal pension Captain Walker made affidavit that Gavin escaped from him, and fled to the Federal forces about the time of the battle of Natural Bridge. I was intimately acquainted with Captain Walker, and have known, of course, many of the confederate veterans, who lived in Wakulla County at the time of the war, and I never heard any suggestion that Captain Walker's war service was not entirely regular, and I never heard any question raised about it. I know Cora L. Cothern, the widow of Captain W. W. Walker, who I understand is an applicant for pension, based on the service of Wright W. Walker, and the above affidavits is made in behalf of her pension claim. R. Don McLeon (L.S.) Sworn to and subscribed before me this 12th day of April, A. D. 1926. L. L. Pararo Clerk Circuit Court ******************************************************************************************* State of Florida, County of Leon I, John M. Towles, hereby certify that I was well and intimately acquainted with Wright W. Walker, of Crawfordville, Florida, who died there about the year Aug. 1903. I was in his employ and managed his mercantile business for him for some 7 consecutive years, thereby being very closely associated with him during those years. I frequently heard him discuss his service in the Civil war, and state that he was at home during the latter part of the Civil war managing the slaves owned by his mother, and looking after her various interests, being privileged to do so under an act of the Confederate Congress, which allowed a man of Military age needed for overseer of ten or more slaves to be excused from Military duty, while thus engaged. I further certify that the records of Wakulla County show the mother of the said Wright W. Walker was possessed of considerable property interests about those years; I having noted that fact while serving as Clerk of the Circuit Court of Wakulla County. I further certify that I was associated with Mr. Walker at the time of his marriage to Cora L. Griffin, and while not present at their marriage knew of the same, and knew that they lived together at Crawfordville until the time of his death, which occurred about Aug. 1903. I understand that Cora L. Cothern, the widow of Captain W. W. Walker, referred to above, is an applicant for pension, as the widow of Wright W. Walker, and this affidavit is made to assist in completing the proofs needed in such claim. John M. Towles (L.S.) Sworn to and subscribed before me this 19th day of April, 1926. F. E. Willis N. I regret to learn of your mother's death and extend to you and your family my sincere sympathy in your loss.
