This is the only office Doctor CONE has ever sought, and such is his reputation for efficiency and reliability, as well as personal popularity, that no sooner was his candidacy announced than his admirers all over the Thirtieth District flocked to his support, and the majority given him was a gratifyingly large one. Doctor CONE was born on a farm near Benton, Columbia County, Florida, March 21, 1875, a son of DANIEL NEWNAN CONE. The Cone family was established in Florida by Doctor Cone’s great-great grandfather, WILLIAM CONE, who came to Columbia County in the early ‘30s from Camden County, Georgia. Here he became one of the prominent men of his day and served in the State Assembly, and was widely known all over this part of Florida. The grandfather, also DANIEL N. CONE, was also a prominent man of Columbia County. DANIEL NEWNAN CONE, father of Doctor CONE, was born in Columbia County in 1844, and he died in 1919. A farmer and merchant, he also served as postmaster at Benton for forty years, and was also a large landowner. He served in the State Assembly and in both public and private life made an indelible impression on his times and community, in whose progress he was a most active worker. He married ANNETTE INGHAM, of Brooklyn, New York, a niece of Judge Forward, one of the early jurists of Florida, a convert of HENRY WARD BEECHER, who came to the South as an educator of the negroes, and an investigator of slavery conditions. He was so favorably impressed with conditions that he settled here permanently. DANIEL N. CONE and his wife had five children, of whom Doctor CONE was the third in order of birth. During the war of the ‘60s he served as a soldier of the Confederacy, and was in many of the Virginia campaigns. Doctor CONE was reared on the homestead of his family, and attended a little school taught by his mother, but subsequently became a student of the Florida State Agricultural College, from which he was graduated in 1896, with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, which institution was then located at Lake City. While at this college he was active in the debating society. He obtained his medical training in the medical department of the University of Virginia, from which he was graduated in 1899, with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Doctor CONE was first engaged in practice at Fort Worth, Texas, but only remained there for a few months, and then settled at Benton, Columbia County, where he remained for seven years, during which time he won the confidence and respect of all who knew him, and he was urged to continue there indefinitely, but he felt the need for a wider field, and in 1907 went to White Springs, Florida. In the meanwhile, during 1905 he took up post- graduate work at the New York Polyclinic on general subjects. In addition to caring for his large practice, which covers White Springs and the outlying districts, Doctor CONE has other interests, and is a director and stockholder of the Columbia County Bank of Lake City. He is a good roads enthusiast and a base ball fan. During the late war he participated in all of the drives for the Liberty Loans, and was chairman of the committee on the Allied War Drives. He belongs to the Hamilton County Medical Society, and the Southern Railroad Surgeons Association. Fraternally he belongs to the Masonic order, the Woodmen of the World and the Columbian Woodmen. In 1901 Doctor CONE was married at Palmetto, Florida, to SALLY MAE ROWLETT, born in Tennessee, a daughter of WILLIAM M. and ELINOR (SWIFT) ROWLETT, both of whom are living. Mr. ROWLETT was superintendent of public instruction of Manatee County, Florida, for over twenty years, and is now a successful citrus grower of that county. Prior to her marriage Mrs. CONE was a popular public-school teacher, and is now active in church and social circles, her culture making her a welcome addition to any gathering. Doctor and Mrs. CONE have five living children, namely: DANIEL NEWNAN. JAMES INGHAM, SARAH ROWLETT, DALE SWIFT and ANNETTE. DANIEL NEWNAN is following in the footsteps of his distinguished uncle, H. I. CONE, rear admiral, retired, of the United States Navy, as he secured an appointment to Annapolis Naval Academy when he was sixteen years old, and was graduated therefrom in 1922.
