Harper, aged 53 years, by occupation a farmer who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Jacob F. Harper who was, on the _____ day of November, 1861, enrolled in Captain George W. Lewis Company “I” of Decatur County, State of Georgia and that while serving as a private in said “I” Company, 31st Georgia Regiment, Gen. Gordon’s Brigade and in the line of his duty at battle of the Wilderness in the State of Virginia on or about the 5 day of May, 1864, I was wounded by a Minnie ball striking the right ankle and slivering the bone, several pieces of the bone coming out afterwards; was sent to a hospital and lay there two months and was sent home; said wound is of so serious of nature that I cannot walk but for a short time in a day and then in much pain and cannot make a support for myself and that by reason of said service and as a direct result of said injuries I am now unable to earn a livelihood; that I am a citizen of said county and State, and have been a bona fide citizen of the State of Florida continuously since January 1st, 1875; that neither I nor my wife owns property to the value of fifteen hundred dollars, and that I am not “otherwise enabled or in a position to earn a livelihood;” that I am not receiving a pension from the United States, or any other State; that I never deserted the Confederate service, and make this declaration for the purpose of being placed upon the invalid pension roll of the State of Florida, as provided by act of Legislature, approved June 2, 1893. Downing NP St. at Large ************************************************************************ We do solemnly swear that the above applicant Jacob F. Harper served with us in the Co. I. 31st Ga. Regt.; that he received the injury at the time and place, and in the manner claimed, and that he is disabled as claimed, by reason of said injuries, and that he did not desert the Confederate service, that he and his wife combined, do not own $1500 in value, and that he is not physically or otherwise able to make a livin. Sworn and subscribed before me this 11th _________(?), 1st Lieut. (x) day of april, a.D., 1896 C. W. Wimberley Co. (I) 31 Ga. Regt. Clerk _____(?) Decatur Co., Ga. We do solemnly swear that we have carefully examined Jacob F. Harper who is to us well known as the applicant for pension above described, and find that he was wounded by a bullet in right ankle. The ball striking the interal malleolus and ranging downward about four (4) inches; also other scars which according to his statement and our belief were caused by abcesses having formed in the joint as a result of the injury resulting directly in the loss of motion in the joint, three-fourths and ability to perform manual labor.
