One Thousand Nine Hundred and twenty seven personally appeared before me, a notary public in and for the county and State aforesaid, Robert C. McKinney, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is 79 years of age, having been born on the 13th day of November, 1848, in the county of ____, in the State of Mississippi. That he is a bona fide citizen of the county of Glades, State of Florida. That he has resided in the State of Florida continuously since the ____ day of ____, 1854. That he is the identical person who enlisted at Ft. Meade, under the name of Robert C. McKinney, on the ____ day of ____, 1864, in Company ____, Regiment ____ of the State of ____ in the service of the ____ in the service of the state and who was HONORABLY DISCHARGED at Tampa, in the State of Florida, on the ____ day of ____, 1865, on account of services not needed - close of war. My Captain was late. Capt. F. A. Hendry of Fort Myers, Lee Co., Fla. That I served faithfully until HONORABLY DISCHARGED from the service of the war in the year 1865, and did not desert the service of the war nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States until after the surrender of the Confederate Armies. (Here state whereabouts at close of Civil War.) That I was near Ft. Meade, Fla. That I have heretofore applied for a pension from the State of Florida and refer to Claim No. ____ for the proof contained therein. (never applied) I am at this time unable to earn a living and almost helpless - nearly blind. That my postoffice address is LaBelle, County of Hendry, State of Florida. Robert C. McKinney, LaBelle, Florida Dear Sir: I beg to acknowledge receipt of your application for pension, which has been filed in the Pension Department for consideration of the Board at its next meeting. I note that you have furnished no proof of your war service and the law requires the affidavits of two comrades serving with the soldier, or the affidavit of a commissioned Officer under whom he served, or Transcript from Washington, none of which have been submitted. I am enclosing herewith blank so that you may obtain the affidavits of two comrades serving with you if possible. There are some soldiers on the roll who served in Capt. Varn, of Fort Meade County of Polk, State of Florida who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical person who enlisted near Fort Meade in the State of Florida on the 30th day of August, 1863, in Company Captain F. A. Hendry, Regiment of the State of Florida, which organization was regularly mustered into the service of the Confederate States of America; that he knows of his own personal knowledge that Robert C. McKinney enlisted in Company Captain F. A. Hendry Regiment of the State of Florida, near Fort Meade, in the State of Florida on the 30th day of August, 1863; that he served faithfully in the said organization until the war ended in 1865, when he was HONORABLY DISCHARGED on account of the war being ended, at Fort Meade in the State of Florida, and did not desert the Confederate States service nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States before the close of the War. (Here state whether the soldier was transferred to another organization, or not, and in captured or imprisoned, state when and where.) He was not transferred, but mustered out of service at the end of the war. I know personally of the above stated service, because I served with him in Company Capt. F. A. Hendry Regiment of the State of Florida, and was HONORABLY DISCHARGED at Fort Meade, in the State of Florida, on the at the end of the war, by reason of war being ended and I did not desert the Confederate States service nor take the oath of allegiance to the United States before the close of the War. The name Robert C. McKinney has not been found on the muster roll for May 7, 1864, to _ (only roll on file) of Company A (Captain F. A. Hendry), 1st Battalion Florida Special Cavalry, C.S.A., nor has a record of the service, capture or parole of any man bearing that name been found as of that organization. The records show that a number of men bearing the name Robert McKinney served in various C.S.A. organizations, but, from the data furnished, none of the can be identified as the man concerning whom inquiry is made.
