THIRD FLORIDA INFANTRY,COMPANY C (Hernando County Wildcats) Captain Walter Terry Saxon (b.4/23/1836 Autoga AL; d.12/23/1924 Hamilton TX) and his son served in the same company. He was a surveyor and surveyed the Everglades prior to the war.He was paid $20,000 which he spent toward the Confederate cause. He enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. He was wounded as Perryville 10/8/1861 and captured later the same year.He was exchanged near Vicksburg in the late 1862.He commanded companies C & H at the battle of Murfreesboro 12/31/62.Wounded in the head at Dallas GA. in mid 1864. 1st Lt.Samuel G.Frierson (b.1836) enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville and was not re-elected 5/8/62.His father and two brothers,James & William served,their grandfather,Perry G.Wall was a Union man.Samuel was active in blockade running during the war. 2nd Lt. Joshua Stafford (b.1837) enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville and was elected 1st Lt. 5/8/62. He was passed on conscript duty 3/2/63 and returned in early 1864. He resigned 10/29/1864. 3rd Lt. William D.O'Neil (b.1834) enlisted 7/19/1861 and was not re-elected 5/8/62. 1st Sgt.David H.Wall (b.1838;d.5/30/1864 La Grnage GA.) enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville and was elected 2nd Lt.5/8/62.He died 5/30/1864 at St.mary's Hospital,LaGrange GA. and was buried in a local Confederate cemetery. 2nd Sgt.John A.Dare (b.1840) enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville and was reduced 5/8/1862. 3rd Sgt.Charles M.Lang (b.1837) enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. Elected 3rd Lt.5/8/1862 but resigned 4/22/1863. 4th Sgt.John J.Sauls (b.1825) enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville.He reduced 5/8/1862 then furloughed to Hernando County.He was absent sick on the remaining rolls and died 2/3/1863 in a Lake City FL. Hospital. 1st Cpl.William Cicero Hayman (b.11/24/1841 Madison Co;m.12/1865; d.5/7/1926 in Manatee Co,buried in De Soto Co.)enlisted at Brooksville 7/19/1861.Captured 5/19/1864 in Cassville GA and sent to Rocky Island Prison.Forwarded to exchange 2/15/1865 and hospitalized in Richmond.Furloughed in March 1865. 2nd Cpl.Franklin G.Powell (b.1838 Bibb Co.GA)enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville and was reduced 5/8/62.He was discharged 1/27/1863 in Lake City.He was 5'1",fair skin,blue eyes,light brown hair. Occupation:Mechanic.He re-enlisted 9/1/63 in Company I, 9th Florida Infantry at brooksville and was AWOL since 8/20/1864. 3rd Cpl. Daniel Hay (b.1835;m. Nancy Yelveton 1866;d.4/11/1886 Palatka).Lived in Hernando Co.and enlisted in Brooksville 7/19/1861. Elected 5th Sgt.5/8/1862.Captured in Kentucky late 1862 and exchanged.Wounded at Chickamauga 9/20/1863 and furloughed.Captured 12/16/1864 in Nashville TN and sent to Camp Douglas prison. Discharged 6/19/1865. 4th Cpl.Andrew A.Boyett (b.12/27/1836 Screven Co.GA)enlisted at Ft. Clinch. Breifly detailed as a hospital nurse in early 1863. He received a Florida pension. PRIVATES Alexander,Colubbus R. (b.10/301822 Jones Co,GA)enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville and deserted 8/12/1861. In his pension application,he claimed to have served as a surgeon for the Samuel Hope's company and John Chamber's company.Stationed in Hernando County during the war. Allen,Lott (b.5/8/1838 Lowndes Co.GA;m.Amanda McLendeon 9/21/1857; d.8/14/1918 in Polk Co) lived in Hernando Co. and enlisted at Brooksville 6/28/1862. Promoted to 4th Cpl. 7/20/1863.Wounded at Chickamauga 9/20/1863,hospitalized in Atlanta, then furloughed 1/12/1864.Captured at Murfreesboro 12/4/1864 as 1st Sgt. and released on oath 6/13/1865 from Camp Chase prison.He was 5' 9", blue eyes, dark hair, florid skin. His name appears on the Honor Roll of Chickamauga. Allen,William T.(b.1843)enlisted at Brooksville 7/19/1861. Absent sick since mid 1862 and furloughed late 1862.He died on furlough in Hernando Co. 11/8/1862. Anchicks,Conrad enlisted 10/26/1861 at Ft.Clinch.He was detained as a musician 5/8/1862 and on detached service as a nurse since 3/1/1863.Wounded severely in the left thigh at Rocky Falls GA 5/1864 and captured.Released 7/27/1864. Arline,Alfred N.(B.1837)lived in Hernando Co.,enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville.Appointed 1st Cpl.1/19/1863,then 2nd Lt. 5/2/1863.Wounded at Atlanta 7/22/1864 and captured at Murfreesboro 12/7/1864.Released on oath from Fort Delaware. Atkins,George W.(b. 5/22/1836 Madison Co;m.Lovey A.Darby 12/15/1858.) Enlisted at Brooksville 7/19/1861.appointed 5th Sgt. 10/1/1861 then elected 2nd Sgt. 5/8/1862.Died of pneumonia on Dec.1863 in a Columbus GA.hospital. he left behind a wife and two daughters. He was 5' 8", occupation; farmer. Barnes,Thomas enlisted 3/1/1862 at Way Key.Hospitalized in Aug. 1862 then furloughed but did not return. He was dropped as a deserter after April 1863.Paroled 5/18/1865 at Thomasville GA. he stood 5' 11". He did not receive a pension. Edwards, F.M enlisted 6/11/1862 in Mobile AL. as a musician. Hospitalized in Chattanooga soon after Murfreesboro 1/2/1863 and deserted from there 2/10/1863. Ellis, James Light (b.1844)enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. Appointed Cpl 8/6/1862, Mortally wounded in the right hip at Murfreesboro 1/2/1863 and captured. Died in Union field hospital 1/19/1863. His brother was next to him when shot. Ellis, Thomas Benton,Sr. (b.6/22/1842 Alachua Co.;m. Dorian Cottrell 9/25/1878; d.2/15/1926 Palm Beach,buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Gainesville) Thomas and his brother served in the same company. Enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville.Wounded in t he left arm and captured at Perryville 10/8/1862. Exchanged at Vicksburg, Dec.1862. He was detailed 10/16/1863 to Capt. James McKay's Company. He then lived in Gainesville as a merchant. He was 5'9". Eubanks, John (b.1840) enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. Died of disease 6/28/1862 in a Mobile Al. General Hospital. Garrett, Charney (b.1821) enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. Discharged 12/11/1862. Giddions, Duncan enlisted 8/12/1861 at Ft. Clinch. He was absent sick since late '62 and furloughed 4/18/1863. Deserted 8/1/1863 in Hernando County while on furlough. Gohens, William enlisted 12/19/1861 at Ft. Clinch & deserted 10/10/1862 from KY. Hall, Seaborn J., enlisted 8/12/1861 at Ft. Clinch. Appointed 4th Cpl. March 1862 and furloughed 5/8/1862. Captured 12/16/1864 near Nashville and sent to Camp Douglas prison. Promoted to 5th Sgt. in early 1864 and was killed 5/14/1864 at Resaca after never being home during his three years in the army. Johnson, Alonzo, enlisted 8/10/1861 at Ft. Clinch. Listed sick in Hernando County in 1863, he was dropped as a deserter on the roll. Johnson, John Ripley (b.10/27/1837 Liberty Co. GA; m. Delilah Hayman 1/6/1859; d. 8/6/1894 Polk Co. buried at Altman Cemetery, Polk Co.) Enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. Listed as 1st Cpl. Sept. 1861. (b.1841) enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. Discharged 9/26/1861 by order of Col. Dilsworth. He re-enlisted 9/15/1861 as 3rd Cpl. in Company K, 8th Fla. Infantry in Tampa and was promoted 2nd Cpl. in late 1861. Discharged again by General Trapier 2/23/1862. Re-enlisted 6/21/1862 Company C, 9th Fla. Infantry at Bayport. He was admitted to Howard's Grove Hospital, Richmond and furloughed 10/31/1864 to Brooksville. Moore, Charles W. enlisted 3/1/1862 in Way Key. Last appears on a roll dates 8/24/1864. Munden, Isham A. (b.1838)enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. He appears as 4th Cpl. in late 1861 but reduced 3/1/1862. Absent sick since mid 1862 but returned in early 1863. He was dropped after April 1863. Nevitt, Cornelius Quincy (b.11/4/1828 in Fairfield Co.SC; m. Christian Arick 6/12/1855; d.9/23/1910 Hernando Co., buried Lake Lindsey Cemetery) lived in Chinsegut Hill. Enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. Discharged for inability 12/13/1861. Ht: 5'11", dark skin & hair,grey eyes. Re-enlisted 6/21/1862 in Company C,9th Fla. Infantry at Bayport and was on detached service since late 1863. Admitted to Howard's Grove Hospital, Richmond on 12/17/1864 and furloughed 2/8/1865. During the war, his wife made clothes for soldiers at the Old Baptist Church in Brooksville. It was said he enlisted to take the place of a brother who was killed. Nicks, Benjamin R. (b.1840) Enlisted at Brooksville 7/19/1861. Captured at kentucky in late 1862 and exchanged early 1863. Wounded in a skirmish near Dalton GAon 2/25/1864 and captured in late 1865 in Georgia. Nicks, Francis Rinaldo (b.1837 Leon Co.;buried in Brooksville Cemetery. Brother of Benjamin) enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. Writing to his wife on 3/9/1863 about General Bragg's harsh treatment "..old General Bragg is very tight on us. We can't a furlough unless we are going to die.." He was absent sick 10/1/1863. Nobles, Bartholomew enlisted 10/26/1861 at Ft. Cinch. Hospitalized in mid 1862 then furloughed in late 1862. He died in Marion Co. 1/19/1863. Osborn, George (b.1842) enlisted at Brooksville 7/19/1861. Hospitalized in mid 1862 and died in a Chattanooga hospital 9/5/1862. Peterson, John L. (b.1832 GA; m. Catherine) Enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville and elected 1st Sgt. 5/8/1862. Severely wounded in the arm at Murfreeboro 1/2/1863 and hospitalized then furloughed. Discharged 2/20/1864. Richburg, Daniel H. Jr.(b.1840) lived in Alachua Co. enlisted 7/16/1861 at Brooksville. Captured 5/19/1864 in Cassville GA and sent to Rock Island prison. Released on oath 6/17/1865. Richburg, Nathaniel (b.1839) enlisted at Brooksville 7/19/1861 but died in Baldwin Fla., on 4/13/1862. Rooks, James (b.1840) enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. Deserted 10/31/1862 from Chattanooga but rejoined 12/24/1863 and placed under arrest in Dalton GA. Row, William (b.1842) enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. He was wounded in late 1862 and hospitalized in Atlanta. Deserted from " Parole Camps " 10/31/1852. Saxon, Benjamin (b.1844 Autauga Co. AL.) enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. Appointed musician 3/1/1862. Discharged 6/30/1862. He was 5'1", fair skin, blue eyes, light hair, occupation: student. May have served in L.G.Lesley's Company. Saxon, Franklin Elmore (b.9/28/1841 Autauga Co. AL; m. Marena May 12/15/1866 (1st); m. Tulula Hope 2/10/1876 (2nd); d. 2/25/1922 buried Hernando County.) Seminole War veteran enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. Wounded at honeymoon near Jacksonville in 1862. Badly wounded at Perryville 10/8/1862 in the leg and instep and was going to be left behind. Franklin's father persuaded Thomas Ellis (also wounded) to stay behind with Frank. In the evening, both men were taken to a farmhouse serving as a hospital and were captured the next morning. Frank was exchanged in the mid 1863 then furloughed 8/29/1864. He hid the regimental flag in his bosom during the surrender and brought it back to Brooksville. He later donated it to the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, VA. Saxon, James Randolph enlisted 5/1/1862 at Midway. Serving as a nurse in Bardstown,Ky when captured. Exchanged near Vicksburg in late 1862. Mortally wounded at Missionary Ridge 11/25/1863 and captured. He died 1/31/1864 at USA General Hospital in Chattnooga. Selph, John J. enlisted 5/1/1861 at Ft. Cinch.Absent since early 1862 and died in Jacksonville 9/1/1862. Simmons, Benjamin Felix (b. 3/6/1830 Lake Jackson; m. Elenora 11/17/1852; d.7/29/1904 St. Michael's Cemetery, Pensacola) enlisted in Brooksville 7/19/1861. Transferred to Capt. Simmons Coast Guard in late 1861. Wounded in foot and resigned 9/17/1862. Paroled 5/9/1865 and arrived in Jacksonville 5/17/1865 as a paroled prisoner. Stafford, Eli W. (b.1840) enlisted at Brooksville 7/19/1861. Absent sick since mid 1863 and died of diarrhea 9/26/1863 in a Montgomery AL. Hospital. Buried in the local Oakwood Cemetery. Stafford, William H. (b.1843; d.11/19/1909, buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Tampa.) Enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville and was dropped after Sept. 1861. Strange,Daniel Joseph (b.5/18/1844 York Co. (b.1826)enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. Promoted Cpl. in mid 1863 then 5th Sgt. 7/20/1863. Wounded at Missionary Ridge 11/15/1863 and furlouged. Returned in early 1864 as a 2nd Sgt. He died 6/15/1864 in the Academy Hospital, Marietta GA. and was buried in Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta, GA. Thigpen, William H. (b.1831)enlisted at Brooksville 7/19/1861. Slightly wounded in the arm at Murfreesboro 12/31/1862 and furloughed. He never returned and was dropped as a deserter after Dec. 1863. Thomas, Roland (b.1840 Thomas Co.GA; m. Martha A.E. 12/25/1862 at Chattanooga. he was 5'6", grey eyes, dark skin & hair. Occupation: Farmer. Tillett, George J.(b.1837)enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. He was absent sick for most of 1863 and was paroled at Greenboro NC. 5/1/1865. Tillett, John W. (b.1841)enlisted 7/19/1861 at Brooksville. Died in a Chattanooga hospital on 10/25/1862.
