Of the eminent lawyers of Hillsborough County none is more generally admired and esteemed for professional ability and personal character than GEORGE H. CORNELIUS of Tampa. His broad reputation as an attorney rests not only on the masterly conduct of important cases which have been entrusted to him as a private practitioner, but also on the splendid discharge of public duties as well, both at Tampa and his former home in Georgia. He was born at Homerville, Clinch County, Georgia, June 20, 1880, a son of JAMES B. and MARTHA ELIZABETH (GIBBS) CORNELIUS, both of whom were born in Georgia, where they are still residing. They had ten children, of whom nine survive, and three of the sons are lawyers, GEORGE H. and A. F., who live at Tampa, and B. W., who lives in Virginia. Of all the children GEORGE H. was second in order of birth. After receiving a preliminary training in the public schools of his native city GEORGE H. CORNELIUS became a student of the Georgia State Normal School, and then, entering Mercer University, studiously laid the ground work of his profession in the law department of that institution, from which he was graduated in 1903, and that same year was admitted to practice at the bar of Georgia. For three years thereafter he was engaged in a general practice at Homerville, but in 1906 came to Florida and spent a year in practice at Saint Petersburg. In 1907, he permanently located at Tampa, where he has built up a very valuable connection. While at Homerville he was appointed judge of the County Court of Clinch County, and served as such for two years, and for one year he was mayor of Homerville. Since coming to Tampa he was elected municipal judge of the city, and served for one term, rendering a much- appreciated service in all offices. He is a Mason and belongs to the Knights of Pythias, Caribous and Columbian Woodmen. In politics he is a democrat. On October 31, 1903, Mr. CORNELIUS married ANNIE JACK, a daughter of J. W. and LOU JACK, of Knoxville, Georgia. Mr. and Mrs. CORNELIUS have the following children: GEORGIA GRACE, UNA, OSWALD and IVAN. As a citizen Mr. CORNELIUS has worked hard to bring about better conditions, and is very proud of the wonderful development of Tampa, and is enthusiastic with reference to its future, and confident that only the beginning has yet been made, and that each year will see further improvements and greater prosperity.
