He has handled a large amount of the better class of brick paving in Florida, and is one of Tampa's ablest and most successful business men. Mr. DAVIS was born in Belmont County, Ohio, June 1, 1864, second of the five children of DAVID R. and SARAH (McKELVERY) DAVIS, also natives of Ohio. ROBERT L. DAVIS was reared and educated in Eastern Ohio, and remained in that state until 1883. On coming South he located at Chattanooga and was engaged in the manufacture of brick in that city until 1893. Then, after a short time at Macon, Georgia, he moved to Tampa in 1895, and has since been actively associated with the business life of this city. Mr. DAVIS continued the brick business here until 1905, and since then has given his principal attention to contracting. He made and put down the first asphalt black paving in Tampa, and since then the Florida Asphalt Black Paving Company has become the largest organization of its kind in the state. The average payroll is $1,000 a week, and the average number of employees is one hundred. Mr. DAVIS is a thirty-second degree Scottish Rite Mason, a Knight Templar, and Shriner, a member of the Presbyterian Church and a democrat. While a resident of Chattanooga he married Miss KITTY WHITE. She died in 1893, leaving one son, MYRON B. DAVIS, now a resident of Tampa. In 1909 ROBERT LEE DAVIS married SADA THORPE, of Savannah, Georgia, and to this union have been born three children: ROBERT L., Jr., ELIZABETH and EDWIN.
