No citizen of Hillsborough County better represents the agricultural interests of that section than FRANK E. De VANE. Mr. De VANE is a pioneer, and has been familiar with the soil and the products of that locality more than forty years. He began his work before any of the modern towns and cities of the county had evolved beyond the position of a mere trading post. Mr. De VANE is president of the Growers Association of Plant City. He was born in Madison County, Florida, February 24, 1864, son of FRANK and NANCY J. (BLANTON) De VANE. His father and mother were born in Georgia, were married in Florida, and were among the pioneers of this state, devoting their lives to the farm. FRANK E. De VANE is the youngest of four children. From the age of eleven he was reared in Polk and Hillsboro counties, and had a common school education. As a small boy he began doing work to earn a living, and was employed both on farms and in the mines for several years. In 1898 Mr. De VANE located on his farm five miles Southeast of Plant City. He has 200 acres there devoted to the growing of truck and fruit crops and general farming. He was one of the organizers and since the beginning has been president of the Plant City Growers Association. He and his brother E. J. De VANE have also been prominently identified with the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Plant City, of which he is a director. These brothers built the bank home for that institution. In 1893 Mr. De VANE married FANNIE C. WHEELER of Georgia, where she was born and reared. They have a family of seven children: MAY, wife of P. L. MILLER of Tampa; CLARA, wife of D. W. MURRELL of Plant City; CLAUD L., a graduate of the Agricultural College and now one of the young progressive farmers of this state; Miss JESSIE; EDGER E., a farmer; DONNA and FRANKIE. Mr. and Mrs. De VANE are members of the Primitive Baptist Church. Mr. De VANE knew the localities of both Plant City and Lakeland before there was a single house to distinguish the sites as towns. His efforts and enterprise have been contributing factors in the growth and prosperity of this region.
