Florida numbers among its representative citizens some of the most distinguished attorneys, men whose names are known all over the country, and one of them has claimed Tampa for his place of residence for some years, he being WILLIAM HUNTER, able and resourceful lawyer and public-spirited citizen, who has been called upon to hold many offices of trust and responsibility. He was born at Mount City, Illinois, November 4, 1857, and his father, WILLIAM HUNTER, served in the war between the North and the South, as a member of the Thirty-second Illinois Infantry, going into the service as a captain and rising to be a lieutenant colonel. He also saw service as a second lieutenant in the Mexican war. WILLIAM HUNTER, generally known as Judge Hunter, attended the common schools of Memphis, Tennessee, and then studied law, being admitted to practice at the bar of Tennessee in 1878. Until 1882 he was engaged in active practice in that city, but then came to Florida, first locating at Dunedin, where he remained for ten years. He then came to Tampa, in 1892, where he has since remained and where he has built up a very large and valuable connection, being for many years closely associated in practice with the late E. R. GUNBY, who occupied a most enviable position among the lawyers and public men of Florida. Mr. Hunter has occupied many high positions in connection with his practice. Under the administration of Mayor MYRON E. GILLETT, 1897-98, he was city attorney for Tampa. In 1902 he was appointed referee-in-bankruptcy for the Tampa District, and held that position for twelve years. His fellow attorneys of Tampa honored him by making him president of the Hillsborough County Bar Association, and later he was elected president of the Florida State Bar Association, which office he held from 1917 to 1919. For more than eleven years he has been very active in the work of the American Bar Association, and was for several years representative to it from Florida, and in 1919 was elected and still holds the office of, member from Florida of the general counsel of the association. For the past twelve years Judge Hunter has been attorney and general counsel for the Florida Citrus Exchange and his allied and affiliated associations. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club, and belongs to the Knights of Pythias. In 1882 Judge Hunter married Miss DORA TENNERY, and they became the parents of four children, namely: IVA DELLA, who married C. H. RUSK, of Tampa, WILLIAM F., FRANK T. and MELVILLE G. WILLIAM F. HUNTER is a manager of the Hunter Electric Company, of which his father is president. Judge Hunter is one of the best-known lawyers in this part of the state, and his services are in demand by those who appreciate the weight of his influence, character and a ability. His long experience, coupled with his natural ability, keen judgment and knowledge of men and the motives which lead them in one direction or the other, make him invaluable as an attorney. As a citizen he is zealous in behalf of his city, county and state, and as a man he measures up to the highest ideals of American capability, courtesy and dignity. Such men as he are an honor to their communities and their calling, and all who know him are proud of him and for what he has always stood, the best and truest in life.
