The Lewis Publishing Co. 1923 Author: History of Florida, Past and Present SUMTER L. LOWRY Jr. Very few lines of business have shown the development attained in the insurance field, and much of this advance has been brought about by educating the public with reference to the necessity of protecting themselves against death, old age, sickness, accident and all losses through adequate insurance taken out with one or other of the old-line insurance companies. This activity has attracted to it not only men of middle age, but those just entering upon a business career, who, bringing to it the enthusiasm of youth, have achieved a signaled success and found in it sufficient rewards for their efforts and the realization of their fondest dreams. Such a man is SUMTER L. LOWRY, Jr., of Tampa, who not only is a successful insurance man himself, but comes from a line of men engage in the same business. SUMTER L. LOWRY, Jr., was born at Saint Augustine, Florida, August 27, 1893, a son of SUMTER L. and WILLIE (MILLER) LOWRY, the former of whom was born at York, South Carolina, and the latter at Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1890 he came to Palatka, Florida, and was there engaged in the drug business until 1894, when he settled at Tampa and engaged in the insurance business, which he is still continuing, both he and his wife maintaining their residence at Tampa. The paternal grandfather, ERNST LOWRY, was born at York, South Carolina, and lived to an unusual old age, passing away at the age of ninety-five years. He was the father of 13 children, all of whom grew to maturity, and of them all SUMTER L. LOWRY, Sr., was the twelfth in order of birth. Five of these children still survive. Growing up at Tampa, SUMTER L. LOWRY, Jr., attended its public schools, and later the Virginia Military Institute, from which he was graduated in 1914, and was awarded the Medal of the Society of Cincinnati for general efficiency in military matters, an honor he cherishes. Returning to Tampa, he organized Company H of the Second Florida Infantry. At the same time he entered the insurance business, and was doing well with it when he was called into the service on the Mexican Border in 1916, and remained there until March, 1917, when he was sent back to Tampa. He had scarcely resumed his insurance work when he was once more called into the service, commissioned a captain, and assigned to the Thirty-first Division, and was not discharged until February, 1919. For the third time he came back to Tampa, and took up the duties of civilian life once more. One of the enthusiasts with reference to the American Legion, he was commissioned by the National Board of that order to organize the American Legion for the State of Florida, and did so with marked capability. He was elected state adjutant at the first meeting held at Jacksonville, in June, 1919, and held this office until May, 1921, when he was elected department commander of Florida. He organized the First Battalion, One Hundred and Sixteenth Field Artillery, Florida National Guards, of which he was commissioned major, and in September, 1922, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel, which rank he now holds. Mr. Lowry shows in his insurance business the same zeal and thoroughness which made him such an efficient officer and successful organizer, and is district agent for the National Life Insurance Company of Chicago, Illinois, and also represents the Aetna Casualty and Security Company. He has twenty agents under his supervision. Fraternally Mr. Lowry belongs to the Knights of Pythias. In 1916 Mr. Lowry married ELIZABETH PARKHILL, a daughter of Judge CHARLES B. and HELEN W. PARKHILL. Mr. and Mrs. Lowry have one daughter, ELIZABETH P. Mr. Lowry is still a young man, not having yet passed his third decade, and yet his life has been full of notable achievements. His remarkable success may in part be laid to the fact that he never undertakes anything until he is fully prepared, but when he once commences, allows nothing to interfere until he accomplishes what he set out to do. A natural leader of men, he is able to secure from those under him a cheerful and effective cooperation that brings about very acceptable results, and it is safe to predict that he will travel far on the road which leads to fortune, and that he will not only secure for himself the emoluments of success, but will aid others to earn a fair competence. It is such men as he who are the nation’s bulwarks in times of war and during the periods of peace.
