B. MITCHELL, M. D. The debt owed by humanity to the medical profession is one that cannot be fully discharged, nor ought it be regarded lightly, for from men connected with it have come the most illuminating truths regarding the race and the methods to be followed in curative and preventative measures. The life of the physician is one of constant self-sacrifice. Unlike almost every other man, he cannot end his day’s work with the setting of the sun, nor can he look forward to nights of untroubled slumber. In his hands rest both life and death, and the summons are liable to come at any moment for him to assist in bringing into the world a new soul, or to snatch from the grave one whose sands of time are running low. It is little wonder that a physician is regarded with such affection by his fellow-citizens, or that he comes to hold a leading position in his community. The medical fraternity has written a few more pages in the history of humanitarian progress during the latter part of the last decade, and one of the most lasting results of the World war undoubtedly is what they were able to accomplish in behalf of the soldiers engaged in that titanic conflict. One of the physicians and surgeons of Tampa who has not only rendered an effective service in the ordinary paths of a general practice, but served his country as a member of its Medical Corps in time of war is Dr. L. B. MITCHELL. Doctor Mitchell was born at Fort Meade, Florida, May 31, 1880, a son of Dr. C. L. and ELLEN (SPENCER) MITCHELL, both natives of Florida. The father was a practicing physician for some years, and he was a brother of Governor Mitchell. He is now deceased, but the mother survives. Of their seven children Dr. L. B. MITCHELL is the fourth born. After completing the courses at the Hillsborough High School L. B. MITCHELL entered the University of New York, and there took his medical course. He served as an intern at Bellevue Hospital, New York City, and then, in 1906, came to Tampa, where he established himself in a general practice and was engaged in it until he entered the service, as regimental surgeon of the Fifty- fourth Infantry, Sixth Division, and was in France from June, 1918, to March, 1919, when he returned to the United States and was honorably discharged. Coming back to Tampa, he resumed his practice. He is a member of the Hillsborough County Medical Society, the Florida State Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Association of Military Surgeons and the Alumni Bellevue Hospital. He is a Scottish-Rite and Shriner Mason. In 1911 Doctor Mitchell married MARY GUTIERREZ, of Tampa. They have no children. He is a man of broad sympathies and strong convictions, and as a practitioner he is firm and resolute, yet gentle. In his service during the war Doctor Mitchell made considerable personal sacrifice, as did so many of the profession, but was glad of the opportunity to use his wise skill and expert knowledge in behalf of those injured in their country service.
