S. SANFORD. No other profession affords its members such excellent opportunities to rise and be of benefit to their kind as does that of the law, and especially is this true at Tampa, where the bench and the bar have long commanded the utmost respect and admiration for the distinguished representatives of highest standing, not only throughout Hillsborough, but other counties. No review of the lawyers of Florida would be complete without mention of S. S. SANFORD, who has attained to notable distinction, and stands out prominently among the men of his profession as an able attorney and a member of the dependable legal firm of Sanford & Hampton. The birth of Mr. Sanford took place in Columbia County, Florida, October 2, 1872, and he is a son of MATTHEW J. and MARY A. (SPARKMAN) SANFORD, natives of South Carolina and Hillsborough County, respectively. From South Carolina MATTHEW J. SANFORD came to Florida in 1856, and continued his occupation of teaching the remainder of his life. Both parents are now deceased. They had eleven children, ten of whom grew to maturity, and of them all S. S. SANFORD is the seventh in order of birth. Growing up in his native county, S. S. SANFORD attended its public schools and the Normal School at White Springs, Florida, the Jasper Normal School and the one at Abbeville, Georgia, and was graduated from the scientific course at this last-named institution. He then took up his legal training in the law department of the University of Georgia, and was admitted to the bar in 1901, and immediately thereafter located at Perry, Florida, where he was engaged in practice for seven years. He then went to Jasper, Florida, and remained there for eleven years, during which period he was engaged in conducting a large and valuable practice, and then, in 1919, came to Tampa. During the time he lived in Hamilton County he served for four years as county judge, and was a member of the state and county committees of his party. Since coming to Tampa he has been a member of the firm of Sanford & Hampton, and maintains offices at 1615-16 Citizens Bank Building. Fraternally he belongs to the Knights of Pythias, Modern Woodmen of America and Woodmen of the World. On August 4, 1904, Mr. Sanford was united in marriage with Miss JANIE MAYS, of Live Oak, Florida, who died in 1918, leaving five children: ELIZABETH, MAYS, ANNA MARY, STEPHEN and JAMES. Mr. Sanford belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church, and is very active in its good work. A hard worker, a diligent student and forceful and able speaker, Mr. Sanford belongs to that class of men who are potent factors in any community in which they may be found. His personal advancement has always been kept subservient to accomplish that which would justify his occupancy of public office and bring about a betterment of existing conditions. He has been wise and judicious in his handling of matters of a diversified nature, not alone in his private practice, but also while on the bench, and is a man whose name will go down in the history of Tampa and Hillsborough County as one of the ablest attorneys and good citizens of his times.
