F. Averiett, deceased, has resided with her continiously (sic) with the exception of 2 occasions wherein Mrs. McClamm[i]ae (sic) has left her place of residence for over a week on each visit. She further states that Mrs. McClamm[i]ae (sic) at the present time is on a visit visiting her daughter in Jacksonville for a week. The said Mrs. Nora Stanford nee Nora McClamm[i]ae (sic) is the wife of Ira Stanford who lives near Harney, Florida, east of Tampa. The said Mrs. Stanford stated that her mother has been getting the mail addressed to Mrs. Mollie McClamm[i]ae (sic)at 2809 Louisiana Avenue, which is the home of the mother-in-law of Mrs. Nora McClamm[i]ae (sic) Stanford. The said Nora McClamm[i]ae (sic) Stanford states that the reason she gets her mail at 2809 Louisiana Avenue, addressed to her mother, is because she is unable to have a rural route box at Harney, Tampa, Fla. The said Mrs. Nora McClammiae (sic) Stanford further states that her mother, Mrs. Mollie McClammiae (sic), has also resided with her continuously with the exception of the above since Mrs. Nora McClammiae (sic) Stanford was married. Mrs. Stanford, under oath, further states that the following named persons are half brothers and half sisters: Chas. C. Averiett, Marine House, Ocala, Florida. William S. Ernest Amos, Comptroller, Tallahassee, Fla. In Re: Mollie Avriett McClammie Widow’s Pension Claim Dear Sir: We have had considerable trouble in obtaining sufficient data in the above styled matter, especially with reference to affidavits by comrades or commissioned officer relative to the service of B. F. Avriett in the Confederate ranks. Upon receiving your letter of December 19th, we immediately wrote Miles T. Cheshire, Alexander Wilson, and Alfred Wilson. We were informed that Miles T. Cheshire had died some ten days previous to our writing him. We have been unable to locate Mr. Alfred Wilson of Eureka, Fla., and are enclosing herewith the affidavit of Alexander Wilson, who was a Sergeant, and will appreciate your advising us if, under the circumstances, it will be necessary for us to procure the affidavit of another comrade of Mr. Avriett. We have investigated, independent of your letter, but have been unable to reach any other parties that were in the service with Avriett. Besides the affidavit of Alexander Wilson, we are also enclosing affidavit of Mollie Avriett McClammie (applicant for pension), to which is attached the affidavits of William A. Barry and Byron Wilder relative to the death of B. F. Avriett, and also the report of the County Commissioners for Hillsborough County. In addition to the above, we are enclosing certified copy of marriage certificate of Ben Avriett and Miss M. E. Dorman, also certified copy of the marriage certificate of Mollie Avriett and D. D. McClammie, together with a doctor’s certificate showing the death of the said D. D. McClammie. Page 014 Page #2, Hon. Ernest Amos, March 5, 1928 We have noted the discrepancies in the spelling of the name Avriett, but as the various papers show the proper connection, we hope the same will be sufficient. We thank you for your cooperation in the past, and will appreciate your advising us what other steps will be necessary for us to take, if any, in order to complete this matter. Hon. J. M. Lee, State Comptroller, Tallahassee, Florida. Dear Col. Lee: I have this date received in my post office box your special delivery letter addressed to me, relative to Mrs. Mollie McClammie. I wish to make the following report on the above widow: First: I have called as per your instructions at 2809 Louisiana Avenue, for the above pensioner and found that she does not reside at such address. The people that live at said address are Mr. & Mrs. Ed Devane, who are no relations. Second: I called on the next door neighbor, which is 2807 Louisiana Avenue, and spoke to Mrs. L. D. Tyler, who informed me that this old lady, Mrs. McClammie, has visited said premises but that she does not reside there. Third: I later called on Mr. Smith of Smitty’s Place who is at 2901 Louisiana Avenue, being a personal friend of mine, and made a similar statement to me as Mrs. Tyler. Fourth: Mrs. McClammie has resided with a daughter by second marriage, Mrs. Ira Stanford, in the wooded sections of Harney, about 10 miles from Tampa. She has been getting the mail at 2809 Louisiana Avenue as per the remarks made by Mrs. Tyler, on account of the poor mailing facilities at Harney. Fifth: Mrs. McClammie at the present time is residing with her daughter, Mrs. Lidia LeDock, 3740 Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida. Mrs. LeDock is the daughter of her first husband, who was named Avriett. Sixth: The following children are the children by first marriage: Page 016 J. M. Lee Comptroller State of Florida Comptroller’s Office Tallahassee Hon. J. M. Lee Part 2 Chas. C. Avriett, Marine House, Ocala, Fla. William S. Avriett, 3420-11th Ave., Tampa, Fla. Della Laster, 2631 Arisera Ave., Dallas, Texas. (The above person, Della Laster, is supposed to have left Jacksonville today for Texas). Lidia LeDock, 3740 Blvd., Jacksonville, Fla. The following person is a daughter by second marriage, and not the child of the deceased veteran: Mrs. Ira Stanford, resides near Harney, Fla. Supplement to section 1 of this letter. I have found noone (sic) at 2809 Louisiana Avenue, Tampa, Fla. It seems to me that the children of the deceased veteran are in a turmoil over the actions of their half sister getting this check and using herself. The children of the deceased veteran are anxious to have the check addressed to their sister, Mrs. Lidia LeDock, at 3740 Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida, where Mrs. Mollie McClammie is supposed to be spending a little time (with her daughter). I have contacted the Hon. J. M. Jackson, Justice of Peace, 4th District, Hillsborough County, Tampa, Fla., and he has informed me that the children of B. V. Averitt, or Avriett, are anxious to see that Mrs. Ira Stanford, of Harney, Tampa, Florida, their half sister, does not profit from the pension of their mother since Mrs. Stanford is not the daughter of the late Mr. Averitt. I have also ascertained that Mrs. LeDock in Jacksonville is trying to get her mother to remain with her. Trusting that this report will give you the desired information, and that it will meet with your approval. Very truly yours, Frank J. Falsone fjf/c Page 018 J. M. Lee Comptroller State of Florida Comptroller’s Office Tallahassee Jacksonville, Fla. August 29, 1936 Hon. J. M. Lee, Comptroller, Tallahassee, Fla. Dear Col. Lee, I have called upon Mrs. Mollie McClammie and talked with her personally concerning her pension warrant for the month of August. She tells me she expects to be with her daughter Mrs. A. H. LeDock at 3740 Boulevard Jacksonville for about two or three weeks, and would like to have the August (only) warrant mailed to her at this address. She also states all future warrants should be mailed to her, 2809 Louisiana Ave. Tampa, Florida. This case seems very peculiar to me due to the fact that the daughter Mrs A H LeDock says she would like to handle her mother’s affairs for her while she Page 019 J. M. Lee Comptroller State of Florida Comptroller’s Office Tallahassee is staying in Tampa, as she claims other relatives in Tampa have been cashing and using her mothers warrants. However, Mrs. McClammie says she is very able to handle her own affairs. Mrs. McClammie states that she did not send the telegram addressed to you as of the 27th, inst., from Tampa, she states some one else sent this telegram over her signature. It would be my recommendation that these warrants be mailed to Mrs. Mollie McClammie personally at the addresses above mentioned. Yours Very Truly, Wallace B. Larson Page 020 Tampa, Florida August 21, 1936 Comptroller J. L. Lee, Tallahassee, Florida. Dear Sir: We, the children of B. F. Averitt, deceased, pray and ask this favor of you. After visiting time and again in Mother’s home, we find that she, living with a half-sister who has recently married, does not have the necessities of life. Mother being near eighty years old and very feeble, is not capable of taking care of herself, so they take her check, and Mother never sees a penny for anything, only barely enough to keep her alive. We pray and ask you to have this check sent to Mrs. A. H. LeDock, 3740 Boulevard, Jacksonville, Florida, she being the youngest daughter of B. F. Averitt, deceased, who will see that each and every dollar is used for Mother’s needs only. She has only a few days more to live, and the ones who are using this money, are no blood relation to B. F. Averitt, deceased. I feel sure you will help us in this matter. We are taking her to Jacksonville, and will do all we can for her. All we want is to see that this man and his wife do not get these checks. I’ll assure you that she never received but very little benefit from the checks, so please let us hear at once, as we are anxiously waiting to hear. Thanking you again and again, Chas. C. C.
