On the roll of this company for November and December, 1864, last on file, he is reported absent, sick in hospital at Richmond, Virginia, since July 28, 1864. No later record of him has been found. To the Honorab (sic) Board of Pensions Dear Sirs: I left my application in the hands of the Clerk at Bonifay on 25th June 1907 Commissioners Court is set on the Monday the first day of July and I have just received a card stating your application No. 8440 for pension was filed 1907 don’t say what tim (sic) it was filed only on the back of the card think that I aught to have heard something before now as some is received vouchers and one Willis Register has received his voucher and he is not a member of our camp Frank Phillips No. 1506. I thought a man had to belong to a camp. It if beloning (sic) to a camp make any difference in a man making proof I cant see it. I belong to Camp Frank Phillipps (sic) No. 1506 and was elected Ensign of the camp. Now I am satisfied there is some men that is trying to get in who are not worthey (sic). Now if you are not satisfied let me hear at once. I have received a cross of honor. There is Capt. McMillon of Chippley Camp he is acquainted with me. Also J. A. Matthias. I believe he also is acquainted with me and corie horne. Now it seven months the 25th of this month. I live in holmes co 2 miles from Graceville. Let me hear soon. J. N. Underwood July 8, 1907 Page 020 Graceville, Fla. Feb. 6th, 1908 Hon. A. C. Croom Tallahassee, Fla. Dear Sir: Pardon me for thus writing you in regard to Mr. John N. Underwood. I know you are anoyed (sic) concerning pensions. Mr. Underwood belong to my Co. E 4 Fla. Bat. Afterwards part of 11 Fla. Regiment. Mr. Underwood came home on a sick ferlow and he was very low down sick and at the expiration of his ferlow he was ordered back to his comand (sic) at that time in front of Petersburg, Va. he started like all good soldiers Page 021 will do and when he got to Columbus Ga he there met a lot of other soldiers that was cut off from their comand (sic) as the Yankees had come in between them their comand (sic). So they got orders to form in to Co. & Regiments and procede to their comand (sic). So they did so and got as far as Danville, Va., and there they got word General Lee had surrendered and thereby they was disbanded and come home. Mr. Underwood goten (sic) home in May 1865. I know Mr. Underwood was a good soldier we was together in Va until I was discharged and come home he never deserted. I saw him mustered into the service and he staid (sic) Page 022 as long as his service was neaded (sic) or untill (sic) the war was closed. He has been a member of Camp Frank Phillips No. 1506 ever since it was organized and is still a member has his cross of honor. Now I ask you to pardon me for writing you this tankley (sic) leter (sic). I know Mr. Underwood is a War-Vey (sic) soldier and I wash (sic) all such good luck in geten (sic) their pension.
