Hall - Indian River County Main Library 1999 This manuscript indexes the following directories: 1885 Webb's Historical, Industrial & Biographical Florida (No names are listed.) 1886-87 The South Publishing Company's Florida State Gazetteer and Business Directory 1889 Elliott's Florida Encyclopedia or Pocket Directory 1907-08 R. L. Polk & Co's Florida Gazetteer and Business Directory 1911-12 R. L. Polk & Co.'s Florida Gazetteer and Business Directory Includes R. L. Polk Florida map. 1916 Fort Pierce, Florida City Directory and St. Lucie County Gazeteer. 1918 R. L. Polk & Co.'s Florida State Gazetteer and Business Directory* 1918 St. Lucie County Directory* 1925 R. L. Polk & Co.'s Florida State Gazetteer and Business Directory 1927-28 Vero Beach, Florida City Directory - Florida-Piedmont Directory Co. Publishers 1931-32 Telephone Directory - Melbourne (This is for individuals who own a telephone.) *Since there are two 1918 directories, the index will have SL after the year just for the St. Lucie County Directory. SL = St Lucie w = Winter ??? Resident (This is only a guess, I was unable to find a key for this.) * = colored person or firm "number" = number of acres cultivated Vero became Vero Beach after 1925. To facilitate indexing, beach was not added to this list. The 1927-1928 City Directory contains street addresses which were not included in this list. Many individuals did not give occupations. If there is an asterisk * after the name, according to the information in the 1927-1928 directory it is to "denote colored person or firm, but we assume no responsibility for its wrong use, errors often creep in." A Word about the Occupation Field: Most occupations were obvious, but some were left with their abbreviations to leave to the reader's interpretation. Many had nothing listed and are noted as "None Given." · 1886-87 has a number, which denotes the number of acres cultivated. · 1931-32 telephone directory, I included the street address if one was listed. POST OFFICE / TOWN DESCRIPTIONS: Descriptions of each town from the directories for the given years are listed below. They are worth repeating here for the interest of the reader. Grammar, misspellings are not corrected from the original. Many of the towns were not included in the directories because of several reasons. 1) They did not exist at the time of the directory. 2) They were no longer a town. 3) Information was not available at the time of the directory. 4) Towns were just listed as a post office with no information about the inhabitants. TOTAL ESTIMATED POPULATION FROM 1911-1912 DIRECTORY = 990 TOTAL ESTIMATED POPULATION FROM 1918 DIRECTORY = 2946 ENOS ==== 1889 Enos is situated on the Indian River, south of Titusville: was established 1889. FELLSMERE ========= 1916 [Fellsmere] Is the center of the great drainage development commenced by the Fellsmere Farms Co., one of the strongest and fairest land companies in the United States about four years ago. Fellsmere as a whole comprises a tract of fine lands and rich much, 9 x 12 miles in area, wholly enclosed in a great dyke, shutting out the waters from the surround lands and with a complete system of great drainage canals and ditches changing the country so developed from a wild, but exceeding rich partially submerged territory to a perfectly drained area of most valuable lands where may be grown to perfection not only nearly every vegetable know to man, but being in the heart of the famous Indian River district, the finest citrus and other semi-tropical fruits in the world. The town of Fellsmere, near the northern end of this tract, ten miles west from the Indian River is a town one mile square, of about 800 population. It is settled almost entirely by Northern people of a high order of intelligence and of lofty ideals who are building for the future a little city which shall embody in its make-up the best of everything known to modern municipal development. Fellsmere town was incorporated by a special act of the Legislature early in 1915. Its charter is most up-to-date and unique. It provides for a government by Commission, the Commissioners, once elected each year, having great power of action, an initiative, referendum and recall. It accords to women the same voting privileges as to men, the first place south of the Mason and Dixon line where full franchise is so granted to our women, and the fact that this privilege was granted by the men by unanimous vote of over 100 of the men of the community when the draft of the charter was acted on in town meeting, marks the advance type of our citizenry. [There are four more paragraphs, too much to include here. One interesting item is that the Fellsmere people named their homes and farms. These have been included under the occupation.] 1918 Population 900. A town located on the Fellsmere branch of the F.E.C. Ry., in St. Lucie county, 25 miles north-west of Ft. Pierce, the judicial seat and banking point. Has electric lights and water works, a bank, a weekly newspaper. The Tribune, churches of the leading denomination and public school. Tel. W.U. Exp., Sou. 1927-28 The city of Fellsmere is located in the northern part of Indian River County, 10 miles west of Indian River on a partially complete cross state road. It is the commercial and residential center for an area of 50,00 acres of the Fellsmere Drainage District which is rapidly developing into one of the most important agricultural producing sections of the state. The town was incorporated in 1915, has a municipal light, water and ice plant and a large modern school. It is connected with the Florida East Coast Railroad by a spur railroad which handles passengers, freight and mail. (Incorporated at the back of the directory, just before the listing of inhabitants.) Fellsmere was incorporated by a special act of the Legislature in 1915. Is a town with modern improvements, electric light and water plants, fine schools and churches. Is ideally located for comfort and health, possessing a wonderful all-the-year-round climate, mild and bracing in the winter months, and fanned by cooling breezes from the Atlantic in the summer. Come to Fellsmere and be happy. GIFFORD ======= 1911-12 Population 100. VERO BEACH ========== 1927-28 Vero Beach, the county seat of Indian River County is the jewel city in the sub-tropical setting of the lower East Coast of Florida. Located on the main Dixie Highway and Florida East Coast Railway, 228 miles south of Jacksonville and 145 miles north Miami, this beautiful city catches the eye of every tourist and leaves a favorable impression. Cutting a silvery path across the eastern section of the city is the Indian River which gives the county its name and forms the label of quality for the fruit and vegetable raised in the vicinity. At the front door of the city is the broad beach and Atlantic Ocean, always the supreme attraction for tourists, together with such other recreational features as are afforded by two golf courses, tennis courts, gun-club, and boating and fishing facilities. The back door of the city opens upon the rich agricultural lands of the Indian River Drainage district, a reclamation project that has made available 50,000 acres of Florida's best soil. Here are grown the luscious citrus fruits which find favored markets throughout the north and all kinds of vegetables, particularly snap beans, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, peppers and cabbage. Small fruits, such as strawberries, and blackberries are cultivated to a considerable extent, while attention is also given to raising of flowers and bulbs and the husbandry of bees. Prosperous dairies may be found, where all year forage reduces operating costs and where nearby markets supply a profitable outlet for the products. Vero Beach grows too rapidly to give statistical facts in a publication of this kind, and its beauty speaks for itself to any visitor. It should be sufficient to say that this city offers every desired feature for permanent residence, winter sojourn or casual visitation and presents opportunities for supremely profitable and safe investments in many lines. Detailed information is always available at the Chamber of Commerce. VIKING ====== 1911-1912 Population 150.
