John W. Clark, Commissioners of Pensions, Atlanta, Georgia Dear Mr. Clark: There is a widow by the name of Mrs. Ida R. Badger, desirous of obtaining a pension in this State by Special Act of the Legislature. Her husband, G. M. Badger served with Gideon Roe. Mr. Badger was granted a medal by the Daughters of the Confederacy and given a Southern Cross. His grave is also decorated with the other soldiers graves at Quitman, Georgia, and he was always recognized as a Confederate Soldier in his lifetime. This I know is very meager information upon which to base a search for a record of his service, but as all his war papers appear to have been destroyed by fire, if you could obtain from your records the Company and Regiment in which he served or any information upon which I could make a request to Washington for Official Transcript of his service, I assure you that it would be highly appreciated by Mrs. Badger as well as myself. I certainly do appreciate the cooperation you have given this Department in the past and any information in connection with Mr. Badger's service that you may be able to furnish will be highly appreciated. With best wishes, I am, Yours very truly, Secretary, Pension Board /b ******************************************************************************* State of Georgia Pension Department Atlanta May 24, 1929 Miss Roumelle Bowen, Secretary Pension Board, Tallahassee, Fla. My dear Miss Bowen: Your letter of May 21, regarding the record of G. M. Badger has been received. Neither the name G. M. Badger nor Gideon Roe has been found in the card index files of the Roster Office, but I have referred your letter to Mrs. Charles Tillman, a prominent member of the U. D. C. at Quitman, Ga., with the request that she examine the County record for the Company and Regiment of this soldier. As soon as the information is received from her I will be glad to forward it to you with the record if it can be located. With thanks for your words of appreciation, and with kind regards, Very truly yours, John W. Clark Commissioner of Pensions By: Margaret W. Dear Sir: With reference to Chapter 9206 (No. 88) laws of Florida, as relates to a Special Act of the Legislature passed in the regular session in 1929, granting pension by special act to Mrs. Ida R. Badger, Sebastian, Florida, widow of G. M. Badger, beg to advise that at the time of introducing this bill, the writer furnished the committee and Senate with all the information I could obtain. The said G. W. Badger, formerly lived at Savannah, Georgia, but as a boy ran away from there and joined the Confederate Army somewhere in Georgia, was wounded in action and was decorated with the Confederate Cross of Honor by the Daughters of Confederacy at Quitman, Georgia. I am advised that Mrs. S. S. Rountree who lives at Quitman, Georgia, officiated upon the occasion of the decoration. The bearer of this letter, Mr. George T. Badger of Sebastian, wishes to confer with you and ascertain if possible, what further proof is necessary in the premises. I hope that you will give this matter your most careful and liberal consideration and feel that it is a worthy case in which a pension should be granted else I would not have introduced the bill. July 24th, 1929 State of Florida: County of Leon Before me, a ____ in and for the State of Florida at Large personally came Geoge [sic] T. That he has heard his father and soldiers serving with his father relate incidents in connection with his service that leads him to believe his father served as he claimed. That he knows of his own personal knowledge that his father was always recognized as a Confederate Soldier and received the Cross of Honor from the Daughters of the Confederacy for the faithful service he rendered during the War. That his grave is decorated on Memorial Day by the Daughters of the Confederacy, and that to the best of his belief and knowledge that his father rendered faithful service to the close of the war and that he never deserted. He also states that his mother never applied for pension before on account of the fact that she did not need the pension, and thought that at any time she would be able to obtain proof of her husband's war service from their native State, that is the State of Georgia. He related to me a great many other incidents of the hardships and exposure that they went through while in the army but I do not remember any especial [sic] incident except the above. W. R. Badger Confederate Veteran Pension #10039 Dear Mrs. Powelson: Regarding the Confederate Military Service of Mr. George M. Badger, it was on the basis of this information that his widow, Mrs. Ida R. Photostatic copy of this bill is enclosed. Also attached is a record of Pension #10039, Mrs. Ida R. Badger, Indian River County, Sebastian, Florida, which bears further information regarding this case and indicates that the pension for Mrs. Badger was approved August 3, 1929, with pay from June 6, 1929, at the rate of $480 per annum. Also enclosed is photostatic copy of letter of April 19, 1933, addressed to Mrs. Badger regarding date of marriage to Mr. Badger, and you will note that she informed the Pension Board that she was married to Mr. George M. Badger on April 30, 1876. As a matter of interest and possible use in your records I am also enclosing affidavit of July 26, 1929, executed in Quitman, Georgia by Mr. W. T. Reeves that has a bearing upon the case. This will certify that the photostatic copies enclosed are true reproductions from official records on file in the State Board of Pension, Office of the State Comptroller, Tallahassee, Florida.
