Millard Caldwell Member of Congress Washington D C Dear Mr. Caldwell: I wish to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the twentieth with enclosures relative to the war service of Mr. T. D. Adkison. Mr. Adkison filed application for pension in the Pension Department on May 8th, 1929, and same was denied. Refiled the application on June 9th, 1931, and again his claim was denied by the Pension Board in charge at that time on account of insufficient proof of his war service. He furnished in substantiation the affidavits of four parties with reference to his service but nothing definite could be obtained of the witnesses service. This application is being refilled for the attention of the State Board of Pensions at its next meeting. With best wishes, I am, Yours very truly, Comptroller /B Page 020 Congress of the United States House of Representatives Washington, D. C. I will appreciate your giving the matter to which they pertain your carefully consideration and advising me in the premises at your convenience. I am anxious to be of assistance to Mr. Adkison, if possible, hence this request. Sincerely, Millard Caldwell C:PN Enclosures Page 021 (Copy) War Department The Adjutant General’s Office Washington A. G. 201 ETC Adkison, Thomas D. (4-10-36) ORD- April 16, 1936 Honorable Millard Caldwell, House of Representatives. My dear Mr. Caldwell: I have your letter of April 10, with which you inclosed one herewith returned from Mr. E. C. Work, of Bagdad, Florida, who desires to be furnished the record of Thomas D. Adkison who is said to have served in the Civil War from Alabama under General Johnson, Major Kimmey, and Doctor Rushing. The name Thomas Dennis Adkison has not been found on the rolls on file of soldiers in service in the Confederate States Army. Silas H. Rushing served as surgeon of Company K, 6th Regiment, Florida Infantry, C. S. A. The other officers mentioned in the memorandum received with the letter have not been identified. However, the collection of Confederate records on file in this Department is far from complete, and failure to find the name of any person thereon is by no means conclusive proof that the person who bore that name did not serve as stated during some period not covered by the records on file. Millard Caldwell, jr., Returning Washington, D. C. My dear Millard: A number of folks have approached me with the proposition that one Thomas D. Adkison, a Bagdad resident, age 90, a civil war veteran should receive a pension from some place or other; no one seems to know whether he can get one from the State or Federal Government; they have gotten up the enclosed statement about him, and have asked that I write you thinking you might have some information on the subject. Would you please take time out to examine this paper and advise what I can do if anything, about the matter. The old fellow is destitute and is at present in the hands of his in-laws, but not doing so well, and if we could help him it would be mighty fine, but I have no information to the effect that the Federal Government helps men who fought in the Southern armies, so I can guess their only help would come thru some State Agency. Do you know of any that could be applied to? With kindest regards and best wishes, I am, Yours very truly, E. C. Work. Page 023 July 2nd, 1931. Mr. M. O. King Graceville, Fla. Dear Mr. King: With further reference to the application for pension of T. D. Adkison and the proof of his war service, I wish to advise that I am just in receipt of a reply to my inquiry to the Pension Department of Texas and I am informed that Isaac Lee H.
