Ellis Co. 1 Battalion Confederate Volunteers from the State of Florida, while in line of duty and in obedience to orders of a superior officer did on or about 15th day of February 1864 at Savannah Ga in said state attempt to board a train to meet the enemy at Oulustee Fla and in doing so in great hurry my foot slipped and I was thrown with great force against the cross bar instead of a cross tie of the car and received a hurt on my left leg which disabled me from duty and on account of the disability I was [dis] furloughed from duty and was never able to rejoin my command. One portion of the bone of the injured leg was removed and I have in consequence been ever since incapacited (sic) for hard work. W. Dear Madam: Your application for pension has been received, and upon examination of same, I note that you have omitted to file certain proofs as is required by recent order of the Board, a copy of which I am enclosing. Very Respectfully, Sec’y Pension Board. Enc. W/G Page 033 Office Of H. B. Gaskin Clerk Circuit Court, Calhoun County, Fla. Blountstown. Oct. 1st, 1888 Hon. D. Lang Adjutant Genl Tallahassee, Fla Dear Sir- Enclosed find affidavit of Wm. M. Ayers regarding pension claim. Mr. Ayers says that he was hurt by a cross bar on the platform of the car, but did not know the proper name and thought it was a cross tie. I feel well assured that it was not intentional of him, but attributable to ignorance altogether, as he is very illiterate and cant know the names of the different machinery of railway cars. I make this statement simple because I think he is justly entitled to the pension and as I am personally acquainted with him, don’t think he would make a false statement on any times. Respy H. B.
