The first paragraph of this letter is as follows: “Some time ago I received a letter stating that on account of the record showing that I served for a short time in the Union Navy, my pension would be dropped”. You state further in the body of the letter that you did join the United States Navy, but that you left it as soon as possible at Boston, Mass. Gentlemen; Some time ago I received a letter stating that, on account of the records showing that I served for a short time in the Union navy, may pension would be dropped. Referring to this charge, I beg to state that I was taken prisoner by the Union army at Missionary Ridge and carried to Rock Island, Illinois and put in prison. As a means of escape, I joined the Union navy which I left as soon as possible, at Boston, Mass., and was on my way back to my command, which was at that time in northern Georgia, when the war ended. I was at that time near Goldsboro, North Carolina, making my way back to my command. My serving in the Union navy was not an act of disloyalty to my country, but only a means of freeing myself from prison in order that I might make my way back to the Confederate Army. I cannot see how that can be called desertion, and I am able to prove that I was near Goldsboro as stated above when the war ended. Yours very truly, G. W. We have all the business that we can attend to in revising the roll under the new law and it will be some time before such cases can be resched. It would do no good for you to appear before the Board as we have y our statements and the records and will be governed by them in considering your case. I am sure that the Board will not alter its decision in your case, however, you may feel that the circumstances justified your action in taking the oath of allegiance to the United States and enlisting in its service.
