McEwen aged 70 years, who, being by me duly sworn according to the law, makes the following declaration in order to obtain the pension provided by act of legislature, approved May 3, 1901, for indigent widows of deceased aged Confederate soldiers and sailors: I am the lawful widow of James M. McEwen, who enlisted ____ day of Sept. 1861 in J. R. Northcutts Company, Co E 22 Alabama Regiment of the State of Alabama and who while in active service and in the line of duty as such ____ was on the ____day of ____186__ at ____ in the State of Alabama. McEwen for reason of no discharge date) That I was really married to said soldier prior to the first day of January 1865, at Jacksonville, in the State of Alabama; that I have been a bona fide resident of the State of Florida continuous since the first day of January, A. D. 1890; that I do not own property real or personal, to the value of $800 in this or any other state, and not otherwise enabled, in a position to earn a livelihood, and have no income from any source sufficient for a livelihood; and that I have not purposely disposed of my property for the purpose of availing myself of the provision of this act. McEwen's first and second set of papers for this proof and if it is not made in one of them this witnesses are now one dead the other moved away and do not know if the other can be found." We do solemnly swear that we personally knew the above applicant Nancy E. McEwen that she was the lawful wife of James M. McEwen, now deceased, that she never remarried since his death, that she is a person of "respectability and good reputation," that she does not own property to the value of $800 in this or any other State, and that she is not physically or otherwise enabled to earn a livelihood, and has constantly resided in Florida since January 1, 1880.
