(Bud) Smith of Parker Lakes in Fort Myers, FL died December 2, 2011. His loving wife of 63 years, Wilma, preceded him in death. He is survived by his two sons and their spouces and three grandsons. Charles was born January 3, 1927 to Harbert and Mittie Smith in New Madrid, Missouri. Charles's two elder sisters also preceded him in death. Charles father died in 1937, leaving Charles and his mother to manage the family farm. Together they survived the great Mississippi river flood of 1937, abandoning their stilt farmhouse by rowboat for the relative safety of New Madrid. As a child of the depression, Charles quit school at age 15 to work on WPA levee reinforcement projects as a blasting specialist. In 1944, at the age of 17, Charles left the WPA and joined the Navy as a SeaBee. He served 18 months on Okinawa. After his Okinawa service Charles was assigned to the Admiral Bird Antarctic expedition in 1946 as a machinery operator. After his military service Charles returned to New Madrid, Missouri and in 1948 married his wartime pen pal, Wilma D. Clark. They lived in the Peoria, IL ara before relocating to Fort Myers in 1991. Charles worked for 37 years in various positions at Allied Mills. Wilma and Charles also owned and operated G&B Cleaners in Morton, IL for 15 years. Charles and Wilma were longtime members of Whiskey Creek Country Club and were avid golfers. Charles has requested no memorial service.
