FL Under the provisions of the Act of Congress approved on the 4th day of August, A.D. 1842, entitled "An act to provide for the armed occupation and settlement of the unsettled part of the Peninsula of East Florida." To all whom it may concern NOTICE is hereby given that under the provisions of the act of Congress above cited, I, Zachariah Davis Do hereby apply to the Register of the proper Land Office for a PERMIT to settle upon One hundred and sixty acres of unappropriated public land, lying south of the line dividing townships numbered nine and ten, south of the base line, and situated as herein described. I aver that I am The Head of a Family and that I became a resident of Florida in the month of April the year Eighteen hundred & forty. I aver that the settlement herein intended is not "within two miles of any permanent military post of the United States, established and garrisoned," at the time of such settlement, and that the same is not known or believed to interfere with any private claim that has been duly filed with any of the Boards of Commissioners, surveyed or unsurveyed, confirmed or unconfirmed. DESCRIPTION OF THE INTENDED SETTLEMENT The northwest quarter of section two, township twelve, range fifteen Give under my hand this 22nd day of April 1843 Zachariah Davis On a Plat map this is in Levyville, Levy County ***************************************************************************************** This came from the Bureau of Land Management: The United States of America Register & Receivers Certificate No. 69 To all to whom these Presents shall come, Greeting: WHEREAS Zachariah Davis, of Levy County, Florida has deposited in the GENERAL LAND OFFICE of the United States, a Certificate of the REGISTER OF THE LAND OFFICE and Receiver of Public moneys at Newnansville, whereby it appears that the said Zachariah Davis has settled upon and entered according to the net of Congress approved the 4th of August, 1842, entitled "An act to provide for the armed occupation and settlement of the unsettled part of the Pensinula of East Florida," and the acts amendatory of the same, the Northwest quarter of Section Two in Township Twelve, South of Range Fifteen, East, in the District of lands subject to sale at Newnansville, Florida, containing one hundred and sixty acres, and six hundredths of an acre, being the tract included in Permit Number three hundred and seventy-six signed to the said Zachariah Davis, dated April twenty-second one thousand eight hundred and forty-three. According to the official plat of survey of the said Lands, returned to the General Land Office by the SURVEYOR GENERAL. NOW KNOW YE, That the United States of America, in consideration of premises, and in conformity with the several acts of Congress, in such case made and provided, HAVE GIVEN AND GRANTED, and by these DO GIVE AND GRANT, unto the said Zachariah Davis And to his heirs, the said tract above described: TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the same, together with all the rights, privileges immunities and appurtenances, of whatsoever nature thereunto belonging, unto the said Zachariah Davis. Laughlin, RECORDER of the General Land Office Recorded Vol 1, page 6 ****************************************************************************************** Zachariah Davis was born in 1790 in South Carolina, moving to GA in 1805 with his parents to Wilkinson Co., GA/later became Laurens/later became Pulaski Co.,GA. Fought with GA militia in Pulaski Co. as Sgt. during War of 1812, at Fort Green & Fort Lawrence, GA, served under Lt. Benj. Newton, who was under the command of Capt. Allen Tooke. Went to Appling Co., GA with father, Zion, in 1819, there he drew GA land lottery for land in Appling Co in 1820. By 1840 he was living in Columbia Co., FL with his wife & children. Zachariah enlisted in Captain A.A. Stewart's Company of the Florida Mounted Militia, commanded by Col. Charles Dell. The unit was active from Aug 18, 1840 until Nov. 28, 1840 and was mustered in at Alligator Settlement. On Nov. 28, 1840, Zachariah re-enlisted in Capt. George E. McLellan's Company of the Florida Foot Militia, to fight the Seminole Indians, serving until June 6, 1841. On 1845 list for Long Pond, Alachua Co. for lst state election. This was held Monday, May 26, 1845. September 28, 1850, Zachariah Davis, under Warrant No. 52186, received 40 acres as bounty land for services during the Seminole Wars. Zachariah Davis died in August of 1860 in Cedar Key, FL. This is my ggg grandfather. Jane Gibbs
