Watson who being by me duly sworn, declares that he is the identical person who enlisted on or about the ___ day of September, 1863 or 1864, in Captain E. J. Lutterloh’s Company, Florida Reserves, county of Levy, in the State of Florida, [* and that while in actual service in said company,] Florida Reserve [* Regiment, of the state of] Florida, [* and in the line of duty as such soldier, at _______ , State of ____ on or about the ___ day of _______, 186_,] and was honorably discharged at the expiration of my service (lined through) [on the] ^ at the [expiration] close of the war [* day of] ________ in Levy county, State Florida, I W. D. 1885, and have continuously resided in this State since that date; that I do not own property, real or person, or real and personal, to the value of eight hundred dollars ($800), and that I am by reason of age incapable of providing a living by manual labor for myself. The children of parents who are unable to support themselves, shall be required to make provisions for their support. 2078. On information filed before the Justice of the Peace of the proper district by any person whomsoever, stating that certain persons have made no adequate provision for their father and mother, or either of them, the Justice shall cause a summons to be issued to said parties, and evidence to be taken as to the truth of the facts stated in the information, and if the same shall be found true, after a fair trial in which the defendants shall have the right to be heard by counsel, the Justice shall issue an order making an assessment on the said children for such amount as shall be necessary for the support of their parents. 2079. Said order shall carry with it the right of enforcement by execution, and shall have the force and effect of a writ of garnishment on the wages of such children, and shall further provide for the person to whom and the manner in which the money assessed therein shall be paid. Watson has not been found on the rolls, on file in this office, of Company G, 2d Florida Cavalry, Confederate States Army. The records show that one J.W. Watson, private of that company, enlisted July 8, 1863, at Camp Randolph, and that he was present with his company on April 30, 1864, date of last muster roll thereof on file. The records also show that an organization known as Captain Lutterloh’s Special Battalion acted with the 2d Florida Cavalry in an engagement in February, 1865, but, as stated in the communication from this office of December 16, 1907, no muster rolls of that organization are on file. Smith, and T. J. Knight, who being by me duly sworn, says that they served in State service, as Suwannee Guards, under Capt Lutterlough, and transferred to Capt Williams Company in the year of 1864 and 1865. Says further that they knew W. J. Watson during such service, and that he served with them, and that he did not desert. Says further that they have known the said Watson fifty years or longer. Says further that they have no interest whatever, in the securing of a pension for the said Watson. I sent in Proof in regards to my not deserting the Command. I am not able to work nor haven’t been in 20 years and I need my pension very bad and I know I deserve it more than some that I know are drawing State Pensions. Croom Tallehasse (sic) Fla Dear Sir & Friend Havent Mr. Carter of Newberry sent you my proofs yet. I got him to get up the proofs & foward (sic) to you about my services in the Confederate war & I want to know whether he had sent it in or not. Yours respectfully, (signed) W. J. Croome (sic) Tallehassee (sic) Fla Dear Sir I received your letter stateing (sic) the reasons why my pension was suspended, that I was reported again for desertion when the war first broke out I joined old Capt Dudleys Co and I hiared (sic) a substitute for 6 mo or during the warr (sic) they received him in my place being that he was more able bodied man than I was. I paid him 6.00 dollars to take my place for some cause the conscript officers got after me. I never knew whether it was because my substitute deserted or what else but I gave them the dodge and I then joined Capt Ludlows Company in Levy Co. I served under him 5 or 6 months and Capt Ludlow detailed 25 men under Col Lou Williams to guard the Suwannee River & I was one that volunteered to go on that duty. I stayed there until the warr (sic) ended and we was disbanded at Manatee Springs on the Suwannee River. Page 017 After we disbanded there I was ordered to Bronson to Co. seat to take the oath of alegiance (sic) and I was discharged in Bronson and I had my discharge but I got it misplaced. I denigh (sic) the charge of desertion for I never deserted any of the Commands that I was in. My substitute name was Aron Smith in Capt Dudleys Company. I have had rheumatism all my life or ever since I was a child and it caused me to be a cripple all my life. One leg now is 2 inches the shortest and I have to walk on crutches and are disabled to do any work at all. If you will let me know who my reperter (sic) are I will make them prove my desertion or sign a liebill (sic). Pleas (sic) write me at once & let me know whether they (sic) Pension Board wants any proof to the above statement if they do I think I can produce the evidence. Yours respectfully, (signed) W. J.
