Assuring you of my appreciation for your prompt attention to this matter, I am, Yours very truly, Comptroller Refer to Application No. 22561 ****************************************************************************************** State of Alabama Auditor Montgomery March 7th, 1924 Hon. Earnest Amos, Comptroller, Tallahassee, Fla. Dear Sir: Replying to your letter of March 4th, asking to be furnished with the war record of Henry Allen Jones and J. W. McClenny, whom you state served in Capt. S. J. Knowles and Maj. McCauley's Co., we beg to advise that we have no records or muster rolls of any Confederate organizations on file in this office. However, we have had an investigation of the records which are on file in the Archives and History Department, made, but same fail to show the names of these tow officers as officers of any regular Confederate regiments. The rolls of all Home Guard companies are filed by counties, and if you could furnish us with the county in which this company was organized, it is possible that we might find some record of such officers as officers of a Home Guard company. We would suggest that you write to the Adjutant General, War Department, Washington, D. C., and probably he can furnish you with some information regarding this matter. Anytime that we can serve you it will be our pleasure to do so. Yours very truly, Alabama Pension Commission J. R. Waldman Chief Clerk, Pension Division ****************************************************************************************** March 11th, 1924 Hon. J. R. Waldman, Chief Clerk, Pen. Div. Montgomery, Ala. Dear Sir: I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 7th instant in answer to my inquiry of earlier date in regard to Capt. S. J. Knowles and Maj. McCauley's Co., and I bet to advise that it appears that J. W. McClenny and Henry Allen Jones enlisted in this Company in Henry County, Alabama and to have been discharged at Abbeville, or near Abbeville, on account of the surrender. I wrote to the Adjutant General, Washington, D. C. for records before I wrote to that Department bug could locate no record of the above mentioned Company and it therefore must be a Home Guard organization of your State. Assuring you that I appreciate your co-operation in pension matters very very much. Yours very truly, Comptroller Refer to File No. 22561 ****************************************************************************************** State of Alabama Department of Archives and History Montgomery In Reply Refer To File No. A911 March 13, 1924 My dear Mr. Amos: Replying to your inquiry, File No. 22561, addressed to Mr. Waldman of the Pension Department, and by him referred to this Department for attention, a record of Capt. James McCallay's Infantry Corps of Beats 4 and 13 First Class Militia, classed by us as Home Guard, credited to Henry County, Ala., show Henry Jones, enlisted March 17, 18965 and W. McClenny, date of enlistment not shown. It is proper to advise that the roll is dated Oct. 10, 1864 and McClenny may have been an original member. This organization was in George W. Culver's Henry County Reserves. Samuel Knowles, a preacher, is shown as 1st Lieutenant under date of Oct. 1864, therefore I presume he is your S. J. Knowles, Captain. An order issued by Col. Culver, Feb. 2, 1865, shows Samuel Knowles promoted to Captain in place of James McCalley promoted to Major of the 2nd Battalion. This organization is purely a Home Guard organization.
