M. Hicks Notary Public, State of Florida My Commission expires Feb. 12th, 1926 ************************************ August 30th, 1923 Mr. J. D. Jarvis, Lovett, Madison County, Fla. Dear Sir: Your application for pension was disallowed this morning by the Pension Board on account of unsatisfactory proof of service. I note that you are establishing your service by the affidavits of Mr. J. W. Hamm and Mr. O. C. Gramling, both of whom are applying for a pension also. You are certifying for Mr. Hamm and Mr. Gramling and these gentlemen are certifying for you and for each other. As a matter of fact, the proof consists of the affidavits of applicants for pensions. One of the rulings of the Board as to proof of service is the competancy of witnesses in every case. What I mean by competancy is to establish the fact that the witnesses are qualified to act. In the case of Home Guard service the Board requires affidavits of comrades who have themselves proven up for pension and are on the pension roll of this state. Now if Mr. Hamm and Mr. Gramling were pensioners of the state as members of Mays Academy Company and had proved their right to the pension, their affidavits could be accepted as proof. There have been similar cases where several men were applying for pensions and certifying for each other, but these cases have been disallowed. If you can obtain the affidavits of comrades serving with you and these comrades are qualified to certify to your application on account of being on the pension roll as a member of the company in which you served, I assure that the Board will be glad to consider the matter again, but under the present condition where all of the proof is made by affidavits of parties who are interested themselves and are applying for pensions, same cannot be granted. Yours very truly, Secretary, State Pension Board ******************************************* Lovett, Fla. Sep 29, 1923 The Hon State Pension Board Tallahassee Fla. Captol In reply to your recent letter I am sending you the affidavit of an old souldier who is already drawin a pension and also who belonged to the same Co we were recruts of. Hoping this will be sufficient evidence Very Resp. John Jarvis ******************************************* November 3, 1923 Mr. John Jarvis, Lovett, Florida Dear Sir: Your application for pension was presented to the Pension Board and again denied as the additional proof submitted was not sufficient upon which to grant the pension. You will recall the affidavit of Mr. John Hicks, in which he certifies to your service, has been presented since the previous denial of your application. The records in this office show that he receives a pension as a member of Company D, 1st Florida Reserves, therefore, his affidavit cannot be accepted as a comrade in service. Yours very truly, Secretary, State Board of Pensions ******************************************* Lovett, Fla., Nov. 2, 1923 Hon. Ernest Amos, Comptroller, Tallahassee, Fla. Dear Sir:- I am enclosing herewith my record in the Confederate Army as shown by the records in the Adjutant General's office at Washington, D. C. I also sent you affidavit of John Hicks who was in the same Company with me as to my service. It seems to me these proofs should be sufficient, but if not please advise and I shall be glad to get further proof if possible. If you do not consider this sufficient I will appreciate it very much if you will let me know in what particular my proof is deficient so that I can make an efford to supply the deficiency. Thanking you and the Board for your careful consideration of my claim, I am Respectfully, John Jarvis ****************************************** War Department The Adjutant General's Office Washington Oct. 27, 1923 Memorandum Judge Geo. Dear Sir: I have your letter of the 2nd inst. enclosing official War Department record of your service in Captain Bryan's Company (D) First Regiment Florida Reserves. This record shows you as enlisted on May 2, 1864 and present as late as August 31, 1864. On the roll for May, 1865 you are charged with being absent without leave. Your name also appears on list of prisoners of war surrendered May 10, 1865 and paroled at Madison May 15, 1865. As your original application for pension shows you as a member of May's Academy Company, I think it would be a very good idea for you to make statement showing the connection between these two organizations. I am filing this information with your application and same will be again presented to the Board at its next meeting. Very truly yours, Comptroller ************************************** Lovett, Fla. Nov 13, 1923. Hon Ernest Amos, Tallahassee Fla. My dear Mr. Amos. In reply to your letter of Nov 8th, 1923. Being young boys and uneducated, and it being so loud ago could not remember the data and tales correctly and regret very much to find an errow made in our applacation date of when we enlisted and also in the Co. If I remember now correctly, we enlisted at Mays Academy Madison County as "Fla Reserves" to rec__te Capt Bryan's Co. and this & know our 1st Lt. R.J. Mays Sr. who died July 8, 1864 promised our parents to keep us younge boys as Home Guards until we became 17 years old. hence we called or was called "Home Guards". Tho infact we were "recruits" used in Madison County unless we were called to replenish a Co. As to my being absent at roll call in May 1865, I was sick in bed with the mumps not able to be there to answer roll call. I think you might find more evidence of the Co. & belonged to if you look up where & took the oath of allegiance in Madison some time after the war closed. I further understand that May's Acadomy, Madison County was a recruiting station for Madison. If this statement is not clear pleas write me at once. Respectfully John Jarvis When I enlisted I only gave my first name or letter "J". When as I grew to be a man I use my enitials. ************************************ November 21, 1923 Mr. John Jarvis, Lovett, Florida. Dear Sir: I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 13th instant in connection with you application for pension. I note your statement relative to your service in the Florida Reserves and Capt. Bryan's Co., and will be very glad to present this letter with your application for reconsideration of the Board at its next meeting. Yours very truly, Comptroller ************************************ October 6, 1960 Mr. W. Carlton Smith Timber Merchant Madison, Florida Re: Confederate Veterans Dear Mr. Smith: This is in reply to your letter of September 28, 1960 in which you request a list of names of Confederate Veterans from Madison County with the sur-names of Jarvis or Pridgin. On reference to our Confederate Records I find that the following pensions were paid to Confederate Veterans, and after their death to their wives, and who resided in Madison County. Confederate Pension #822, Reuben Jarvis and after his death to his widow, Mary M. Jarvis. Confederate Pension #2707, John Jarvis and after his death to his widow, Mrs. Sallie Jarvis. Confederate Pension #12912-A, A. J. Jarvis and after his death to his widow, Martha Jarvis. The above three pensions being paid to residents of Madison County as indicated on their applications. Under the name of Pridgin I find that under Confederate Pension #5459, a pension was paid to William W. Pridgen from Sumter County, Florida. Confederate Pension #10244, was paid to Mrs. Ella Pridgen, wife of Marcus Pridgen of Duval County, Florida. Confederate Pension #12137, John Pridgean and after his death to his widow, Elizabeth Pridgean of Taylor County, Florida. I do not find any names of Pridgin covering Confederate Veterans who may have originated from Madison County. In regard to the cost of photostatic copies it is a policy of the State Pension Board when large groups of requests are received to charge for approximately the cost of the supplies required in making the photostatic copy which is .50 per sheet; Under the name of Jarvis as indicated above there are thirty-three sheets containing information that might be of interest and which would give you a full detail of information regarding the veterans in question, including the applications of the widows. In the event you are interested in the Pridgean from Taylor County, to receive a full report in that connection there would be eight sheets of photostatic copies. Should you desire this information we will be glad to furnish it to you on the basis as specified above; however, since it may be possible that you will be in Tallahassee sometime, it is suggested that unless you want all of the information as historical records that possibly you would be interested in coming by the office in room 101, Carlton Building where we would be pleased to let you look over the original records. Please be advised that it is always a pleasure to be of service. Very truly yours, W. C. Hoffman, Secretary State Board of Pensions ************************************ Widow's Pension Claim Under General Pension Law of Florida State of Florida } County of Madison} On this 10th day of September, A.D.
