As near as we can learn the facts in the case are as follows: Mr. McClellan was in Stewart's Saloon when Perry Smith, also widely known, walked in and asked McClellan for payment for the pasturage of some cattle. McClellan replied that he would pay for the pasturage when Smith paid him for some cattle which he (McClellan) claimed Smith had stolen from him, or words to that effect. A few words followed when Smith, it is claimed, struck McClellan in the stomach. McClellan raised his stick to return the blow but was caught by persons present and the men were separated. In a few minutes McClellan remarked that Smith had struck him in the stomach and that "it hurts." Examination disclosed a deep knife stab in the abdomen. Physicians were hurriedly summoned and the wounded man was made as comfortable as possible. He was removed as soon as he could be, to the home of Will Barrett where he lingered until his death which occurred about 7 o'clock Sunday night. The unfortunate affair is deeply regretted by the many friends of the deceased and the accused. Mr. McClellan was buried Monday. He leaves a widow and several children together with many relatives and friends to mourn his untimely death.
