In company with Plumley and Charlie Dickinson, lads of about his own age, Richard had spent the morning in the woods and fields in quest of birds. The boys had just about completed their hunt and were returning home. Charlie Dickinson was walking in front with his gun on his shoulder - a single barrel breech loader - and Richard was just behind him. Young Dickinson stumbled and his gun accidentally discharged, the entire load of No. 4 shot entering the body of Richard just above the hip bone, producing a ghastly wound. The boy was so close to his young friend that the wads in the gun also entered his body. Assistance was secured as speedily as possible and runners were sent for physicians who did everything possible but to no avail, the lad lingered in great agony until Sunday afternoon when death relieved him of his sufferings. Richard was the son of Mrs. Carrie Connell and was a bright, sturdy boy. His sad death is deeply deplored. ----------------------------------------------------------- Mr. and Mrs. Connell are heartbroken over the death of their son, Richard, who died on Sunday afternoon. Before he died he told his mother that he was all right and was trusting the Lord. O, that all our young people might give their hearts to Jesus. His remains were buried in the Madison cemetery on Monday, Pastor Stephen Crockett officiating at the funeral service. May the grace of our Lord be given to the bereaved ones in this hour of sorrow.
