Street Cemetery (also known as the "Old Palmetto Cemetery" and the "Yellow Fever Cemetery") is located in a residential neighborhood, on the corner of 5th Street and 14th Avenue, in Palmetto, (Manatee County) Florida. It is also close to Palmetto’s Historical District. This cemetery represents three main areas of Palmetto history. First, it is the original public cemetery in Palmetto. Samuel S. Lamb donated this acre of land to the Village of Palmetto, for use as a public cemetery. The first record of this public cemetery is in a Property Deed executed between Samuel S. Lamb and Sarah E. Lamb, his wife, and Alfred R. Anthony. This agreement included approximately forty acres, "...excepting a strip of land twenty feet in width along the entire length and on the East side of said lot reserved for a public street and also one acre of land near William O’Neils for a public graveyard." This document is dated April 24, 1882. A true copy was filed and recorded on May 22, 1885 by Robert S. Griffiths, Clerk of County Courts. This map shows the area described to be two hundred feet on each side. The current Manatee County Property Appraiser website references this same description under the section described as "Short Legal Description." This website information was last updated June 10, 2005. Samuel S. Lamb is recognized as the founder of Palmetto. In addition to being the original public cemetery, it is also the burial location for the first victim in Palmetto of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1888. Mary Howze contracted yellow fever from a traveling salesman and died a few days later. Prior to her death in 1888, the cemetery had only two or three burial sites. There were so few deaths up to that time that a road had not yet been cleared to the cemetery. When Mrs. Howze was buried, they cut a road leading to the cemetery so her casket would fit through. At the time of her illness, Mrs. Howze was cared for by Mrs. Peter Harllee. Mrs. Harllee who was pregnant at the time also came down with yellow fever and gave birth twenty-four hours later. Peter Stuart Harllee was born with yellow fever on September 26, 1888. He and his mother both recovered. After the death of Mrs. Howze, additional victims of the yellow fever epidemic were buried in this cemetery. Due to this practice, some local residents would refer to the cemetery as the "Yellow Fever Cemetery." Finally, many of the people interred in the 5th. Street Cemetery is a representation of several founding families and original settlers of Palmetto. Names such as Lamb, Harllee, Howze McLean, Rowlett, Pickens, Robinson, Willis and Whitehead are found in this cemetery. These families and others are cornerstones of Palmetto history. Descendants of many of these families still reside in Palmetto or in the neighboring city of Bradenton and remain active in historical preservation and community projects of Palmetto. There are currently only 44 marked burial sites, this cemetery is full and could include over 100 additional burial sites.
