Dear Madam:- Your pension claim under the Act of 1909 has been considered by the Board of Pensions and was not allowed for the reasons stated below. Yours very truly, Jefferson Bell, Secretary to the Board of Pensions In re pension claim #16983 – Conflicting statements of your continuous residence in this state in the affidavits on file in your former claim and the renewal of your claim. Page 013 Hawkinsville, Ga., October 2, 1908. In Re Application of Mrs. Elizabeth W. Affleck, for Widow’s Pension. S. T. Sistrunk, Clerk Circuit,Court, Marion County, Fla., Dear Sir:-- I believe the positive statements made by the witnesses in the above stated application, hereto attached, are true; also that the statements made in the application by Mrs. Affleck are true and correct. I desire to state for myself that I was well acquainted with Mr. A. H. Affleck while he was a member of the 8th Georgia Regiment of Infantry, being myself a member of that regiment from its organization in May, 1861, till Lee’s surrender in April, 1865. I have also met the said A. H. Affleck a number of times since the close of the Civil War. My recollection is that the said A. H. Affleck enlisted at the organization of said 8th Georgia Regiment, the latter part of May or first part of June, 1861, as a member of the Pulaski Volunteers, Co. “G”, of said 8th Ga. Regt., but was soon after enlistment detailed as a musician and made leader of Regimental Band, and he continued to hold this position until he was honorably discharged from service some time in 1862, exact date not remembered. As a member of the said 8th G. Regt. I was actively engaged in the First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) July 21st, 1861, and I well remember that the 8th. Ga. Band, led by the said A. H. Affleck, obtained permission from the officials to lay aside for the time being their musical instruments, and being furnished with muskets did heroic work in that engagement, Mr. A. H. Affleck’s bravery being especially conspicuous on that occasion. I can most cheerfully say that A. H. Affleck was a true and heroic soldier while in the service of the Confederate xxxxxx States, and a patriotic citizen while afterwards a resident of this state. I trust the application of Mrs. Affleck will be granted. The witnesses whose names are appended to the application, T. J. Holder and J. W. Lancaster, to my certain knowledge were faithful members of the same company with Mr. Affleck and myself, and they are now good citizens of Pulaski County, the former holding the position of Clerk to the Board of Commissioners of Roads and Revenue, and the latter being Clerk of The Superior Court for the past twenty six years and reelected for two more. Very Respectfully, D. G. Fleming State of Georgia, County of Pulaski. In person comes D. G. Fleming, a citi- (sic) of said State and County, who on oath says the statements made by him in the above communication are all true to the best of his knowledge and belief. D. G. Fleming Sworn to and subscribed before me, this 2nd day of October, 1908. P. T.
