Capital Publishing Co., Tallahassee, Florida State Printer Page 008 Pension file – B 11384 July 30, 1908 Mrs L.M.Baldwin, McIntosh, Fla. Dear Mrs Baldwin:- I have your letter in reply to my card stating that state troops of other states are not pensioned under our law and you have mis-understood my meaning. Applicants are required to show that they have been citizens of this state ten years before making application for pensions. When I said that state troops of other states are not pensioned I meant that persons who were not in the regular Confederate Army, such as home guards, reserves and what was termed state militia. These branches of troops were never in the regular Confederate Army but were in the service of the state and subject only to the military authority of the state and not of the Confederate States. Any person from any state who was in the regular Confederate Army and who establishes such service, age and citizenship is entitled to a pension. Home guards and reserves of this state – who were in the state service of Florida and under the military authority of Florida are also pensioned. Home guards, reserves, and militia of other states are not pensioned while regular Confederate soldiers of other states are pensioned. Yours very truly, Secretary. Page 009 McIntosh, Fla. July 28th, 1908 Mr. Jefferson Bell, Secretary State Board of Pensions Dear Sir: Your card received saying that State troops of other states are not pensioned under the laws of this State. There is J. O. Turnipseed who has only lived in Fla. 10 years he is from S.C. There is Mr. Llewellyn who is from Ala. Also Mr. Walkup who lived in Ga. All of them draw pensions and live here if Page 010 they draw a pension, do not see why I cannot. Very Respectfully, Mrs. L. M.
