Washington, Sept. 29, 1909. Respectfully returned to the Comptroller, State of Florida, Tallahassee. The name G. W. Boyles has not been found on the rolls, on file in this office, of any company of the 2d Florida Cavalry, Confederate States Army, and no record has been found of the capture or parole of a man of this name and organization. F. C. Ainsworth The Adjutant General (A.G.O.72-1) Page 013 Pension File – B December 3, 1909 Honorable Albert W. (illegible), Governor, Tallahassee, Florida. Dear Sir:- In reply to your inquiry relative to the pension claim of Mrs Eliza E. Boyles of Marion County, I have the honor to advise you that this applicant was advised that the service shown in her claim in “Haws’ Company” was not within the provisions of the pension law now in force. It appears that there was a local organization of Home Guards known as Howse’s Company which operated in the neighborhood of Marion County during the Civil War, but it was not a part of the 2d Florida Cavalry. Company C, 4th Florida Infantry was commanded by Samuel G. Howse and this is the only company commanded by Howse that was in the Confederate States Army from Florida. Mr Grantham mentions in his letter that certain persons who served in the same company with Mrs. Boyles’ husband have been pensioned. Each application is considered upon its merits and without relation to any other claim. I have not examined all the claims he mentions but certain men named by him applied from the First Florida Reserves and were pensioned as such. Yours very truly, Secretary to the Board of Pensions. Page 014 November 17, 1909 Mrs Eliza E. Boyles Sparr, Florida Dear Madam:- Your pension claim under the Act of 1909 has been considered by the Board of Pensions and was not allowed for the reasons stated below. 16977 – There was no such company in the 2d Florida Cavalry as Haw’s Company or Howse’s Company. It appears that the service upon which this claim is based was performed in a company of home guards and is not within the provisions of the law now in force. Yours very truly, Jefferson Bell, Secretary to the Board of Pensions In re Pension claim # Page 015 Sept. 6th, 1913. Mrs. Elizabeth E. Boyles, Sparr, Florida. Dear Madam: In taking up your claim for consideration by the Board of Pensions, I find that the service of your husband was witnessed by two citizens, instead of two comrades. The Pension Law now in force requires the affidavit of a commissioned officer, or two of his comrades. I am sending you herewith enclosed a blank for the use of his comrades in making the affidavits. Very respectfully, Secretary Claim #16977 Additional Comments: NOTE: Words in [] are lined through in original File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/fl/marion/military/civilwar/pensions/boyles42nmt.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/flfiles/ File size: 18.3 Kb
